ENCLOSURES
It is recommended that the City Commission adopt
a resolution permitting the Dade Heritage Trust,
Inc. to relocate the Brown House a.k.a. Coral
Rock House), a historically signi_ficant structure,
to the northwest section of Watson Island where
it would be used in conjunction with existing and
planned marina facilities and the Japanese Gardens.
On January 28, 1982, Tibor Hollo of Florida East Coast Properties
was before the Commission seeking zoning variances to construct a
hotel on North Bayshore Drive. During the meeting Mr. Hollo confirmed
that he would donate the Brown Residence, which currently occupies the
proposed hotel site, to the Dade Heritage Trust and that he would absorb
the cost of moving the structure to a new location.
Numerous locations were studied and rejected as relocation sites, as
described in the attached analysis.
The City has the firm of Greenleaf-Telesca under contract to do the
marina master plan for Watson Island. The plan calls for a dockmaster's
headquarters on the northwest shore of the Island not far from the
Japanese Garden.
The Dade Heritage Trust supports this plan, They would be the recip-
ients of a donation from Mr. Hollo, including the house itself and up to
$100,000 to cover the cost of moving the house to Watson Island. After
the structure is relocated to Watson Island, the Trust would deed it to
the City.
Once the house is situated on Watson Island, the City would have several
options for its rehabilitation and use, as described in the attached
analysis. The recommended use as a dockmaster's office and restaurant
would provide for the building restoration to be carried out by the
restaurant leasee. The City's expenses would be limited to site
improvements.

City to be a partner in the saving of a significant historic
building and at the same time realize a needed facility_ with
minimal cost to the City.
Time is of the essence since the Brown House must be moved off
Ir. Hollo's property by August.
