CITY OF MIA MI, FLORIDA
*o Honorable Mayor
and Members of the
City Commission
FROM Howard V. Gary
City Manager
INTER -OFFICE MEMORANDUM
DATE July 11, 1983 FILE
SUBJECT Amateur Baseball League
REFERENCES.
ENCLOSURES.
The Miami Amateur Baseball Association is a project sponsored
by the Recreation Department of the City of Miami. As the
sponsor of this recreational program we must provide playing
fields for 110 games.
This league is filling a gap in the recreational and educa-
tional needs of our community and represents the City of Miami
throughout Dade County. Because the sponsors of the teams are
defraying most of the expenses, the City of Miami is able to
offer this important program at very little cost to the City.
Our only expense was $695.00 to Florida International Univer-
sity.
Each sponsor has contributed $1,200.00 towards the use of
Florida International University field and the cost of umpires,
baseballs, scorekeepers, uniforms, etc. The inability to use
Bicentennial field, as planned, forced us to approach the spon-
sors to donate a great deal more than expected.
The league was an initial success as nine of the ten teams
were evenly matched and not until the last day were the first
and second places decided. More than 200 players participated
including Blacks, Latins and Anglos. Five of the players who
participated are having professional baseball tryouts and one
has been signed by the New York Yankees.
Miami Beach is allowing the league to use its field at no cost
(including lights). Florida International University has been
permitting games at their park for a minimum fee of $50.00 per
game and $15.00 per hour for the use of the lights. They have
done this in order to cooperate with this program.
As the league was sponsored by the City of Miami, and other
communities are offering their services at little or no cost,
it is only fair that Miami make our facilities available for
this worthwhile and positive community program.
Since this is a City sponsored event, I have therfore recom-
mended that the Miami Baseball Stadium fee be waived for this
program.
