SUBJECT: "Teter Beater"
Tram/Interim
FROM: Roger M. Carl Parking Facility
Director
Department o r
During the the first six months of operation of the Interim Parking Facility, the
"Meter Beater" Tram accrued an accumulated loss of $8,765.00. Losses are
projected to increase to approximately $1,500.00 per month if the tram is
maintained in its current method of operation. Voyager Tram has agreed to
lower their charge from $23.70 to $22.50 per hour per tram. This reduction
is estimated to be $400 peer month over the next six months.
Conversely, a $2,500 monthly profit for the parking facility is projected if
the tram is discontinued. Those revenues would aid in recovering operating
expenses as well as a portion of the $234,583.13 construction cost. Some
customer participation would be lost if the tram is discontinued.
It is the recommendation ,of the Department that sixty days be allotted in
which to work with the Downtown business community to subsidize the tram,
potentially via advertising. In the event that this support does not
materialize during the next sixty days, the alternative would be to
discontinue the tram service. We believe that the City Commission should
take the position that the tram should not be subsidized by the City and
therefore regup,t that *hie -item he scheduled for discussion at the next City
Commission meeting.
