HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-83-057983-535 RESOLUTION NO. 1 51 A RESOLUTION ACCEPTING THE DONATION OF A SCULPTURE FOUNTAIN IN THE SHAPE OF A PALM TREE FROM THE GOVERNMENT OF CHILE AND RE- QUESTING THE ART IN PUBLIC PLACES COMMIT- TEE TO PROVIDE TO THE MEMBERS OF THE COM- MISSION A LIST OF RECOMMENDED SITES FOR THE LOCATION OF SAID SCULPTURE. WHEREAS, the City is committed to providing art in public places; and WHEREAS, the Chilean General Consul, on behalf of the Go- vernment of Chile, has expressed a desire to donate to the City of Miami a sculpture fountain in the shape of a palm tree and fabricated from Chile's primary export, copper, by sculptor Roy Datz; and WHEREAS, the Art in Public Places Committee has approved the sculpture but not a location. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The City Commission accepts from the Chilean Government the gift of a sculpture fountain in the shape of a palm tree and made from copper by Mr. Roy Datz. Section 2. The City Commission requests that the Art in Public Places Committee provide to the Members of the Commis- sion a list of recommended sites for the location of said sculpture. Gary DATE: June 30, 1983 FILE: City Manager SUBJECT The Donation of a Copper ' Sculpture Fountain by the Government of Chile FROM, Carl Kern, Director REFERENCES: Agenda Item for July 18, 1983 Department of Parks City Commission Meeting ENCLOSURES: "It is recommended that a sculpture fountain made of copper by Roy Datz be accepted as a gift from the gov- ernment of Chile; and that the Art in Public Places Committee provide to the Members of the Commission a list of recommended sites for the location of said sculpture." The Chilean Consul on behalf of the government of Chile has expressed a desire to donate to the City a sculpture fountain by Roy Datz. The sculpture will be of a palm tree, modeled after the City's logo, will be 9 feet tall and 4 feet wide at the top, and will be made of copper, which is Chile's primary export. The Art in Public Places Committee recommended that the City accept the donation but has not recommended a site for its location. Mr. Roy Datz is a Chilean Sculptor, artist and designer who special- izes in copper as a medium. Some of his major works are on display in Miami and include: "Four Buildings", an exterior copper fountain located at Brickell Place; "The Horses", embossed copper doors at Charlotte Interior Decorator's Outlet on Decorator's Row; "The Tri- angular", a copper sculpture on display at the Alvarez Gallery; and "Four Drops for the Lady", an exterior copper fountain located at the Bequers Corporation Building.
