Grant to Dade Heritage Trust
for Relocation of Brown Residence
to Watson Island
For City Commission Meeting of
July 18, 1983 (companion
appropriations ordinance)
It is recommended that the City Commission
authorize a grant of $45,000 to Dade Heritage
Trust, Inc. to cover the costs of a foundation
and utility connections necessary to complete
the proposed relocation of the historic Brown
Residence to Watson Island.
On June 9, 1983, the City Commission adopted Resolution No. 83-490,
granting permission for Dade Heritage Trust to move the coral rock
house to Watson Island and agreeing to City ownership when the move
is complete. The current owner of the historic Brown Residence has
agreed to donate the coral rock house to Dade Heritage Trust along
with the sum of $100,000 to cover the cost of moving the structure
to Watson Island. However, this donation is contingent upon the
structure being removed from its present site prior to September 1,
1983.
Although the $100,000 contribution from Florida East Coast will cover
the cost of moving the structure, an additional $45,000 is needed to
design and construct a suitable foundation upon which to secure the
structure on Watson Island; and thereby complete the move. A companion
item to this resolution requests appropriation of the necessary $45,000
from the Unanticipated Earned Interest account; however, said funds
will later be repaid by revenue expected to be generated by development
of the facility.
It is recommended that a grant of $45,000 be made to Dade Heritage
Trust on an emergency basis to ensure that the historic Brown Resi-
dence can be moved from its present site in time to leverage a sub-
stantial private investment and secure for the City a substantial
structure of great utility and value for the anticipated marina
development on Watson Island.
