HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-83-0826J - 8 3 - 8 3 9 9/12,'83 RESOLUT ION NO0.71 A RESOLUTION ENDORSING AND SUPPORTING THE EFFORTS OF THE STATUE OF LIf3FP,TY - ELLIS ISLAND CENTENNIAL COMMISSION TO RAISE $30,000,000 TO RFSTORE AND PRESERVE THE STATUE OF LIPERTY; ACCEPTING THE APPOINTMENT OF THE C I TY COt4t•1IS5ION 11Eh1BFR5 TO SERVE ON SAID COMMITTEE; AND ENCOURAGING ALL RE9TI)FNTS OF THE CITY OF MIAMI TO CONTRIBUTE TO THIS WORTHWHILE PROJECT. WHEREAS, the Statue of liberty has been a symbol of freedom in America for almost a century and has stood as a welcoming beacon of hope for milliorin of immigrants seeking to fulfill their dreams of freedom and prosperity in America; and WTIF:REAS, over seventeen million immigrants have come upon this proud monument in the Harbor of New York City, which serves as a gateway to the United States; and WHEREAS, the Statue of Liberty was presented to the American people by the people of France on July 4, 1884, the 108th Birthday of our Nation, and dedicated by President Grover Cleveland on October 29, 1886; and • WHEREAS, today the Statue of Liberty is feeling the strain of 97 years of thrusting her torch into the skies above New York Harbor; and WHEREAS, both the Statue of Liberty and the island upon which she stands are in a serious state of deterioration, and restoration and preservation work is urgently needed; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami has always been a place in which immigrants have been welcome and have prospered; and WHEREAS, in recognition thereof, the members of the City Commission have been appointed to serve on the Statue of Liberty - Ellis Island Centennial Commission; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: CITY COMMISSION MEETING OF SE P 12 `�IM RESOLD t 10': 11 83-8261 REMARKS. Section 1. The Citv Commission hereby enthusiastically endorses and supports the efforts of the Statue of Liberty - Ellis Island Centennial Commission to raise $30,000,000 to restore and preserve the Statue of Liberty, our Nother of Fxiles. Sect. inn 2. The members of the City Commission hereby proudly accept appointment to serve 19 members of the Statue of Liberty - Ellis Island Centennial Commission. 5er_tion 3.
