Dear f-ir. Hayor and Commissioners:
The American Association of University Women - iliami Branch wishes
to be on record as urging this body to both authorize and appropriate
funds for FY 1984 so as to move this municipality closer to a sworn police
officer level of 3.0 officers per 1000 population.
Mr. Mayor and Commissioners, the people of our community have demonstrated
their desire for increased police protection. The polls, the statements
from civic groups -- most notably Miami Citizens Against Crime of which
this Association is proud to be a sponsoring member -- and the myriad
interviews with individual citizens all deliver the same message: we
want a safe community.
Like this body, the AAUW wants to see our city, already a great city,
become a model for urban centers throughout this nation. We, too, want
to see new industries settle here; we, too, want to see our city
as a leader in finance and international trade. But, more than any of
these things, we want to be safe. And, as is widely recognized, until
we are indeed safe the other growth goals we have referenced will not
be realizable.
We know that your budget decisions are complex and difficult. However,
a decision by this body to ensure adequate funding for the Department
of Police, City of Miami, will be one which will serve as a sturdy
frame -- a frame which will hold and allow the picture of growth and
vitality to be painted.
We thank you for allowing our view on this important issue to be
made a matter of record.
Respectfully,
/'Jofi C. Herrmann, President
