"It is recommended that a portion
of Coral Gate Park, at SW 16 Street
and 32 Avenue be named the "Tomas
Cruz Picnic Area."
The City Commission adopted Motion 83-721 on July 28, 1983, which
proposed to name a portion of Coral Gate Park, located at SW 16 Street
and 32 Avenue the "Tomas Cruz Picnic Area".
Tomas Cruz was a hero of the Bay of Pigs Invasion. He returned to
Miami after 20 months of incarceration in Cuba to take an active role
in the Little Havana Community. As minister of El Calvario Baptist
Church, Mr. Cruz helped new Cuban immigrants to find homes and jobs and
to learn English.
The Miami Memorial Committee and the Department of Parks have reviewed
this proposal and recommend that a portion of Coral Gate Park be named
the "Tomas Cruz Picnic Area" in recognition and honor of Mr. Cruz'
distinguished service to the residents of the City of Miami.
