NEDA's Request for Financial
Support
After review of NEDA's proposal, the Department of International
Trade Promotion (DITP) recommends that the requested financial
support be denied. Programmatic and technical considerations
account for our decision:
1. In an effort to maximize exposure and minimize costs, only
those major regional trade fairs were targeted for City
participation. Our current presence in the largest and
most important trade fair in the Southern Cone, the Inter-
national Fair of Santiago, Chile :(FISA), rules out our
participation in lesser fairs in the immediate vicinity.
2. Not enough lead time is being provided to successfully carry
out the necessary recruitment drive. The opening of the
Lima Trade Fair on November 16, 1983, is barely fifteen
working days away. In addition, selection of participating
firms can not be done arbitrarily. Careful market research
is required in order to identify those companies with best
sales potential in the particular area.
3. NEDA's proposal, if funded, would amount to no more than
duplicating services already provided by the Department
of International Trade Promotion.
