Odio 11, 'O" Assistant City :Manager U =A-E :iovember 9, 1983 TILE ;Le.E:- Proposed Resolution - ."10,000 Grant to Professio, Inc. °EFERE•4CES ENCLOSURES It is recommended that a grant in the amount of $10,000 be authorized to Professio, Inc., in support of their ongoing program of pro- viding free medical services and legal orientation to the needy within the City of Miami, with said funds to be allocated from the Special Programs and Accounts, Contin- gent Fund, as per the attached resolution. Profession, Inc., a non-profit corporation of the State of Florida, is currently providing free medical service for the needy in the Greater :Miami area, primarily Little Havana. Services also inclu- de a legal orientation program. This program is operated entirely by volunteers; professional and non-professional, donating a certain number of hours each week to provide out -patient care for needy persons who cannot afford to pay and who are ineligible for Medicare or :Medicaid. Since January of 1983, Professio has assisted over 1,450 recipients. The proposed 1984 budget is $49,240, with anticipated income pro- jected to be $31,240. Professio has requested funding assistance from the City of Miami to cover the $18,000 deficit. In that the City Administration considers this a most worthwhile effort by members of our community, it is recommended that a $10,000 grant be authorized with said funding to be allocated from the Special Programs and :.ccounts, Contingent Fund, as per the attached resolution. 83-1019 PROFESSIO Professio is a non-profit corporation organized under the laws of the State of Florida, exempt from taxes under the Internal Revenue Code, which attempts to serve the needy of the Greater Miami area, primarily in Little Havana. Professio is run entirely by volunteers. These are men and women, professionals and non-professionals, who donate their time and their services to ensure that the neediest of the needy in our community can overcome their economic hardship. The Greater Miami community has enthusiastically supported Professio since its birth by donating time, money and services. These benefit the needy directly. CURRENT ACTIVITIES At the present time, Professio is doing the following in Miami, primarily in the Little Havana area: a) Providing free medical services for the needy; b) Operating a legal orientation program. The medical clinic provides out -patient care for needy persons who cannot afford to pay the services of physicians or private clinics and who are ineligible for Medicare or Medicaid. The services are primarily designed to reach recent entrants to the United States from the Caribbean, Central and South America. The physicians who attend clinic patients all volunteer their services. They donate a certain number of hours each week and see patients on the day which they come to the clinic. Patients receive care from volunteer internists and cardiologists at the clinic. They refer those who need other specialized care to volunteer specialists who see them at their private offices. The clinic also provides free dental services, laboratory examinations, x-rays and medicines subject to budgetary constraints. Professio selects recipients on the basis of need and handles clients referred by other ac_encies in the area. Essentially, Professio serves those who fall below the federally establishea poverty line and are not eligible for benefits from 83--1019 Pace 2 any other source.
