SUPPORT OF IHE PROPOSED CLINICAL CENTER
IN DADE COUNTY FOR IMPLEMFNTAT ION Of THE
MIAMI HEART INSTITUTE'S "SYSTOLIC
HYPERTENSION IN THE ELDERLY PROGRAM"
BE IT RESOLVED BY 111E COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAll I,
FLORIDA:
Section 1. Community support of the proposed
establishment of a Clinical Center in Dade County For
implementation of the Miami Heart Institute's "Systolic
Hypertension in the Elderly Program" is hereby strongly
urged.

study. The gU,1,tion of whether ISH should be treated,however, has not beer:

adverse effects, and that elderly people willincly
participate in a placebo -controlled trial and co -ply with
the drug intervention.
The que-stion of whe-her should be tre-ated is a Tajor
area in hypertension research that has not yet been
resolved and reoresen;.s an im.por-ant publi c health
issue. X. fav0rab;.e o'u,tcome of a full-scale trial would
have broad public ' ealth implications.
The cene:al research design is out -lined in -his Request
For Proposals (RFP) . A. three-phase program is planned.
Phase : will ccr.sist of reining the :rel minary draft
Ierotoccl included in this R:7-1 and the develo=ent of an
ooeratio:,s nanual. The final protocol and operations
nanual developed du:ing ?^ase I must be ap?roved by the
Director, m.iL3I prior to the beginn;-c- of Phase II.
