Acting Director
Department of Parks ENCLOSURES
and Recreation
At the request of Mr. Shephard, Manager of the Dupont Plaza,
to the City Commission, the Parks and Recreation Department
was requested to analyze the Riverwalk to see how it could be
extended under the Brickell Avenue Bridge. By completing this
connection, the Dupont Plaza would have direct pedestrian access
to the City of Miami/James L. Knight convention center. After
meeting with Mr. Shephard and analyzing the site the Parks and
Recreation Department recommends the following:
Step 1- The old walkway under the bridge should be immediately
re -opened after repairing the lights, making repairs
and re -landscaping. An additional small segment of
walkway would have to be added to connect the old
walkway with the Riverwalk. This walk could be done
using in house forces and would cost approximately
$27,000 which could come from the supplemental fund
or other sources.
Step 2- The long range solution would be to continue the
Riverwalk under the bridge with a direct connection
to the Dupont Plaza Property. This connection will
take longer to implement because it involves some
design work and the public bidding process. A pre-
liminary estimate for this connection is approxi-
mately $41,000.
It is recommended that step 1 be implemented right away and that
step 2 also be initiated. Parks and Public works could go ahead
and design and bid out step 2. Prior to awarding the bids,
construction funds would have to be identified.
Attached for reference are preliminary cost estimates prepared
for the above work.
