HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-84-0412-84-319 RESOLUTION NO. 84-41 A RESOLUTION ALLOCATING AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $2,000 FROM SPECIAL PROGRAMS AND ACCOUNTS, CONTINGENT FUND, TO THE MIAMI NORTHWEST EXPRESS TRACK CLUB, INC. FOR THE 9th ANNUAL TRACK AND FIELD CLASSIC, TO BE IIELD JUNE 9, 10, 11, AND 12 , 1984 AT MIAMI-DADE COMMUNITY COLLEGE, NORTH CAMPUS, SAID ALLOCATION BEING CONDITION- ED UPON COMPLIANCE WITH CITY OF MIAMI ADMINISTRATIVE POLICY NO. APM-1-84, DATED JANUARY 24, 1984. WHEREAS, the City of Miami desires to support track and field athletic competition; and WHEREAS, the Miami Northwest Express Track Club, Inc. is plan- ning the 9th Annual Northwest Track and Field Classic for June 9 - 12, 1984, at Miami -Dade Community College, North Campus; and WHEREAS, the event will significantly enhance the possibili- ties of attracting athletes from around the world who will be pre - training for the 1984 Summer Olympics; and WHEREAS, the Miami Northwest Express Track Club, Inc. has re- quested $2,000 from the City of Miami to help defray costs; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. An amount not to exceed $2,000 is hereby alloca- ted from Special Programs and Accounts, Contingent Fund, to the Miami Northwest Express Track Club, Inc. for the 9th Annual Track and Field Classic to be held June 9, 10, 11 and 12, 1984, at Miami - Dade Community College, North Campus. Section 2. The herein allocation is conditioned upon com- pliance with City of Miami Administrative Policy No. APM-1-84, dated January 24, 1984. PASSED AND ADOPTED this Sth day of April , 1984. ML FROM rl Kern REFERENCES: Acting Director Department of Parks ENCLOSURES: and Recreation Recommendation: This department recommends City sponsorship to assist the Miami Northwest Express Track Club, Inc. in conducting the 9th Annual Northwest Track and Field Classic, to be held June 9-12, 1984 at the Miami Dade Community College, North Campus, by appropria- ting a $2,000 grant to defray expenses with funding from the Special Programs and Accounts, Contingency Fund. Background: The Miami Northwest Express Track Club, Inc. is presently final- izing glans to conduct the 9th Annual Northwest Track and Field Classic scheduled for June 9-10, 1984. Last year's event attracted an outstanding field of 857 parti- cipants from throughout the United States, the Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Jamaica and West Germany. This year already, sixty- three (63) two -track clubs and individuals have committed par- ticipation and will have the opportunity to share in cultural exchange, grow both physically and socially, as well as express their athletic abilities. We believe this event will significantly enhance the possibili- ties of attracting athletes from around the world who will be pre -training for the 1984 Olympics. The total budget estimated for this event is $41,000, $2,000 of which has been requested of the City. Last year's classic drew a field of 857 boys, girls, men and women, including thirty (30) track clubs. Sixty-three (63) track clubs have confirmed participation this year, all to share in cultural exchanges, grow both physically and socially, as well as express their athletic ability. Sites: D7iami-Dade Community College, North Campus Dates: June 9 - 10, 1984 Cash Batch: $40,970 Audience Expected: 5 - 10,000 - We recommend support for this event via a $2,000 grant to help defray the cost of expenses in order to assist in providing this opportunity to the youth of South Florida. j1984 is Olympics year and athletes from around the world are interested in coming to the United States to prepare for the 1984 Olympics to be held in Los Angeles, California. It is our desire to attract these athletes to Miami to train and compete. Therefore, this department recommends sponsorship as requested.
