KMI'AMI "Al., TV DROUGHT"
Itts been a long dry spell for Miami ... years and years as
a matter of fact since network TV shows originated from here.
The spell is about to be broken on July 9th when the Miss
Universe Pageant...once again ... is beamed from Miami to a
worldwide audience pegged by its promoters at $200000000,
including 601000000 viewers in the United States.
Harold Glasser ... Miss Universe promoter... drives a hard
bargain. In this case $300,000 cash ... plus donated goods and
services worth additional hundreds of thousands.
The City of Miami only gets a one-year contract ... it would
have been desirable to get three years or five...to build.con-
tinuity of location. But...despite the deal's weaknesses...
Miss Universe ends our TV drought.
VIDEOTAPE AUDIO
Shots of past TV shows
that originaged from
Miami
Remember those days 20 years ago
...when Miami Beach Auditorium
was turned into Jackie Gleason's
home? His weekly shows were
seen across America for four
straight years. We were TV city
with Gleason every week. And,
in the good 'ol TV days we also
had other important originations
...Ed Sullivan...Arthur Godfrey
...Jack Parr ... Steve Allen...Mery
Griffen... Phil Donahue...Mike
Douglas, and we had Flipper and
the Surfside Six series. Halcyon
days...indeed.
Why can't we bring back the good 'ol TV days for Miami?
What went wrong?
Super publicist Hany Meyer...who was then the middle man in
getting the star shows here...thinks the area since has just
fumbled the ball.
