Dear Mayor Ferre and Honorable Members of the City Commission,
The Florida South Chapter of the American Institute of Architects would
like to take this opportunity to voice our concern regarding amendments to
the sign regulations of the zoning ordinance (Agenda Item #24, June 28,
1984) as they pertai_n to Billboards and/or veneral advertising structures.
As you may be ax•;arc, the chapter has cnsistentl.y over a number of years
been involved with sign and hi1.lboard Icpis]_at:ion in t11e City. The regulations
establislied under Ordil?anCe I`6871 and siihsequently incorporated into Ordinance
#9500 were endorsed by the chapter as rcnsonnblo and proper sign legislation.
We are very disappointc^d and disturbed to learn, however, that billboard removal
which has been in liti_gatioa-1 for fourteen vcnrs has not heen effectuated and
is not at this Point of nri_mc concern to the City of Miami.
The amendments prccsently before the Commission are deemed to he a further
relaxation of the hillhoard regulation of which the chapter is opposed. The
proposed sign height of 50` is excossive and is not in Scale with our urban
structure; the hi.11hoard spacing, although a control, is not one that would
necessaril,Y lesson the number of new sign locations in our sct land use pattern;
and, the changing of the angle when viewed in the context of the section being
amended, has no mc>rit. It is obvious that the proposed changes are directed
toward changing the prohibition of billboards along expressways and the chapter
would strongly urge the Commission to turn down any proposed amendment that
would lead to elimination of this prohibition.
Sincerely,
J ome Filer, President
