MOBIL CORPORATION

NEW YORK, NEW YORK 10017

NEW YORR, June 28 -- Parks, subways and run-down neighborhoods
in six major cities will be spruced --up this summer as part of a
$1.18 million summer jobs for youth program announced today by
Mobil Corporation.
With contributions up 18%, Mobil has expanded its jobs
program from three to six cities, adding New Orleans, Trenton
and Miami to Dallas, Chicago and New York City. The program will
provide some 1,400 young people with summer employment.
New this year is the Mobil "Green Team" -- a summer jobs
project which will involve disadvantaged young people in clean-up,
horticultural and environmental projects designed to improve
the landscape of city parks and depressed neighborhoods. Five
cities are launching Mobil Green Teams this summer: New York,
Trenton, New Orleans, Dallas and Miami.
The Green Teams are modeled after the successful New York
City "Clean Team," supported by Mobil Foundation since 1982,
in which young people clean and paint subway stations and wash
away platform graffiti.
"Mobil's summer jobs initiatives are designed to have a
multiplier effect: we provide disadvantaged young people with
meaningful work opportunities, and they in turn provide needed
services to the community at large," said Rawleigh Warner, Jr.,
Mobil chairman.

"Human services have come to occupy a central place in
Mobil's contributions program," Mr. Warner said. "We are
committed to improving the quality of life in the places where
we do business, and we believe our summer jobs efforts are quite
successful in this regard."
In New York City, Mobil Foundation, Inc. today announced a
grant of $531,740 to the city's Summer Youth Employment Program,
up from $500,000 last year. The grant. will provide summer jobs
to 600 young people working with the Clean Team and Green Team
and 70 college -student supervisors.
As a special feature of the New York City program, 100 Clean
Team and Green Team members who need reading, writing and math
help will spend about one -quarter of their work time receiving
computer -assisted instruction. The remedial program, called the
"Mobil Academy," was begun last year and succeeded in improving
reading skills by an average of about one grade level.
Mobil Foundation is making $50,000 grants to New Orleans,
Trenton and Miami to launch Green Team projects in these cities.
They are expected to provide between 150 and 200 young people
with summer jobs.
