according to police.
The wound left Jackson a partial
paraplegic, according to Dr. Marcos
,onzalez, who treated her at Jack-
ron Memorial Hospital. Gonzalez

:ondition Is permanent.
"The police's biggest concern
hould be to protect people's lives,"
aid Handfield. "They could have
fired at the car's wheels, not
hrough it."
Jackson has not been arraigned
efore now because she spent two
tonths recovering at Jackson and
ames Archer Smith Hospital.
She now faces a life sentence on
he charge of aiding and abetting in

ATLANTA — Tired of being
awked at, hooted at and proposi-
oned, angry residents in two At-
inta neighborhoods have adopted a
ew line of attack against a dec-
Je-old prostitution problem in
Heir area.
Homeowners in the St. Charles-
reenwood and Midtown neighbor-
bods are jotting down the license
ig numbers of the johns who tire-
:ssly circle their streets, so they
an find out who the men are and
3tify their wives or employers.

tier two alleged accomplices,
Jerry Davis of Homestead, and a
youth whose name has not been re-
leased because of his age, were set
to go on trial today.
Meanwhile, Jackson's $1,168
hospital bill at James Archer Smith
hospital has also generated into a
controversy between the city of
Homestead and Dade Countv.
Edward Stojakovich, the hospi-
tal's business manager, has had no
luck collecting the bill from Jack-
son or the Homestead Police depart-
ment.
Citing an ordinance that says cit-
ies may be liable for wounds sus-
tained by suspects while being ar-
rested, Homestead City Manager
Alex Muxo has sent Jackson's bill
to County Manager Merrett Stier -
helm. The matter has not been set -
tied.
Until recently. Jackson used a
wheelchair. She now uses a brace
on one leg and a cane, according to
her cousin.
"You know how a baby learning
to walk walks?" said the cousin, Al-
icia White. "That's how Gardenia
walks." Jackson is now undergoing
theraphy at Jackson.
White said Jackson now lives In
South Miami in the home of another
cousin, who takes care of her. She
said Jackson was a security guard
with Wells Fargo before the shoot-
ing.
"She had a good job," said White,
who said she's asked her cousin
about the incident, "but she doesn't
answer me."
"All she does now Is sleep,"
White said. "She doesn't what to go
out or anything."
