The man is Ed Newman and on the street corner is South Florida Blood Service, Ed Newman is an offensive guard for the Miami Dolphins football team. During the fall. of 1981, 1982 and 1983, the 11-year all -pro lineman served as spokesman for the cause of blood donation in South Florida. Thanks to his personal generosity and the support of local businesses he has been singularly effective in this role. His work was recognized this year through state and national awards citing his voluntary service from the Florida Association of Blood Banks and the American Association of Blood Banks. Consider the followinq statistics: In the four month period from September through December 1980, before Mr. Newman began his service, voluntary donations to South Florida Blood Service totaled 13,236. The following fall, the first season of Mr. Newman's service, donations increased 63 percent to 21,600. In the fall of 1982, donations grew by another 35 percent to 29,242. Donations in 1982 were 221 percent higher than those in 19801 Mr. Newman's efforts in 1983 promise to produce the most successful fall campaign in South Florida history. More than 205 local organizations including offices, military bares, churches, synagogues, hanks, hotels, unions, social clubs, civic groups and governmental agencies will hold blood drives in response to this campaign. Donations are expected to exceed 12,000 within the 14-month period. The evidence of Mr. Newman's effectiveness is clear. The success of the "Ed Newman Challenge" has resulted in lifesaving treatment for thousands of hospital patients in South Florida. Within a three block radius of the street which would bear Mr. Newman's name are located Jackson Memorial Hospital, Cedars Medical Center, Veteran's Administration Medical Center, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and Highland Park Hospital. Last year alone patients in these hospitals used in excess of 32,300 pints of blood which Mr. Newman helped recruit and South Florida Blood Service collected, processed and supplied. Iiis campaign in 1;outh Florida was imitated in 1982 by the Blood Center of Southeastern Louisiana, utilizing players from the New Orleans Saints. And he has become a model for other NFL players in donation campaigns. Now when Dolfans mention number 64, Ed Newman, they not only discuss his 11 years as an outstanding professional football player, they also talk about his volunteer role with the blood program. And they role up their sleeves to give.
