I am h<a.ppir to report; to you that the newly -reorganized International Festival ;•ra. n sma.shl_ng success and was a harmonious event enjoyUed by all who att.endecz . I'd like to read to you an unsoli_ci_ted letter from a Piro. James de Vallance of Coral Gable.-,, i.;ho I do not know, which was published in the Miami Herald on T -tine l 7th. The heading on the letter read: "Dinner Ivey Festival Miam:]_ at its Finest." The text of the letter was as follows: "To the editor: Last weekend was one 'of the best weekends since we came to live in Miami. Whoever thought up and organized the International Festi- val at Dinner Key has done more for Miami than all the talk and getting nowhere in a hurry at varous meetings. People from many countries, now living in Miami, were there; it really was a United Nations. It was great to see so many families tasting each other's food, and enjoying each other's music and dancing. The costum.es of the dancers were pretty, varied and colorful. We learned quite a bit about each country reprf-opted. Everyone was easy to get along witl: and tail. to, and lung~uage certainly was no barrier. We came away rfeioicing that we are abele: to share this great city of Miami witin so many wonderful people." International Festival eport...... 2 The first event of the Festival was the City of Miami International Ball held at the Biscayne Bay Marriott Hotel on Saturday night, June 2nd with 450 persons attending. Our continucuu entertainment program on two stages starred hundreds of performers representing 26 different nations. 84-84: International Festival Report ...... 3 And now I'm happy to report to you on the financial aspects of the event. And of the total expenditures of $88,215, including the in -kind audi- orium grant, a. total of $26,251 was paid to city departments or off -duty city employees. Our operating budget, exclusive of the Executive Director's salary had revenues of $88,215 and expenditures of $81,299, leaving a surplus of $6,316 to return to the City. Our attendance of about 6,000 was less than we had hoped for due == to several factors: (1) j'e had no funds available for advertising since we had to spend so much on refurbishing the Festival with new signs, new decorations, enlarged mailing lists, etc. (2) the only available date we had for the Exhibition Center was in conflict with the Outboard Regatta dates (3) Many people who attended the Festival during the F past three or four years dial not want to attend again because of being disappointed in the event. F — a We had marvlou-cooperation from the City administration and the high liolit of our entertainment program was the martial arts demonstration by City Manager Howard Gary, who broke a block of wood with a chop of his hand. International Festival Report........4 It is my s-Incere belief that we can increase our paid attendance at least four -fold, incre.as-ing our revenue by $36,000. That would not only pay for PJI_ execut-1 _v- di.rnctorls salary, to rel.ur-in o the Giiy. but would p.-rodiic(- n n.1.
