HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-84-1099J-84-992 RESOLUTION NO. 8404a99 A RESOLUTION APPROVING, IN PRINCIPLE, THE MOTION PASSED AT THE SEPTEMBER 19, 1984 MEETING OF THE CITY OF MIAMI INTERNATIONAL TRADE AND DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE, A THIRTY - MEMBER ADVISORY COMMITTEE TO THE CITY MANAGER WHOSE PRINCIPAL OBJECTIVE IS TO ADVISE THE CITY OF MIAMI ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF A FIVE- YEAR INTERNATIONAL TRADE PROMOTION STRATEGY, SUPPORTING IN PRINCIPLE THE INTERNATIONAL CENTER OF FLORIDA'S OBJECTIVE OF CONTINUING TO EXPLORE THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN "INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS CENTER" IN MIAMI, WHOSE PRINCIPAL PURPOSES WOULD BE NOT ONLY TO HOUSE THE OPERATIONS OF THE CITY'S OWN DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, INTERNATIONAL CENTER OF FLORIDA, AND OTHER LOCAL INTERNATIONAL TRADE RELATED ORGANIZATIONS BUT ALSO TO SERVE AS THE PRIMARY OFFICIAL DISSEMINATOR OF RELEVANT INTERNATIONAL TRADE AND INVESTMENT INFORMATION, TO ORGANIZE AND COORDINATE SYMPOSIA, TRADE FAIRS, EXHIBITIONS AND CONFERENCES RELATED TO INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS, AS WELL AS TO PROVIDE FOREIGN REPRESENTATIVES WITH TEMPORARY OFFICE SUPPORT FACILITIES. WHEREAS, Miami is becoming a truly sophisticated global city as evidenced by the fact that such international organizations as the International Center of Florida, the Florida International Bankers Association, the Florida Exporters and Importers Association, the Council of International Visitors, the Insurance Exchange of the Americas, thirty-four foreign consulate offices, twelve bi-national chambers of commerce and nineteen trade offices that are all located in this area; and WHEREAS, Miami needs a centralized facility and professional staff to adequately coordinate the various international activities of Miami area municipalities, organizations and businesses involved in developing international trade and commerce; and CITY COMMISSION MEETING C. ` OCT 10 so 62 RESOIUTIQN N _t Rf.MAIN<S•-- WHEREAS, such a facility to be called the "International Business Center" would not only house the aforementioned entities but would also serve as the primary official disseminator of relevant international trade and investment information, would organize and coordinate symposia, trade fairs, exhibitions and conferences related to international business, as well as provide foreign representatives with a temporary office support facility; and WHEREAS, the development of the "International Business Center" would further project Miami's image as an exceptionally attractive U.S. location for the development of international trade and investment since all international business development efforts would be professionally coordinated from a single location; and WHEREAS, the International Center of Florida (ICF) has { been at the forefront of developing such a center and the City's own Department of Economic Development is also desirous of having its —�� permanent home in such a facility and is strongly in favor of the overall concept, has been assisting the ICF in further developing this project; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The Motion passed at the September 19, 19$4 meeting of the City of Miami International Trade and Development Committee, a thirty -member advisory committee to the City Manager whose principal goal is to develop a five-year international trade promotion strategy for the City of Miami, supporting in principle the International Center of Florida's objective of continuing to explore the development of an "International Business Center" in Miami, whose principal purposes would be not only to house the operations of the City of Miami's Department of Economic Development, the International Center of Florida, and other local international trade related organizations but also to serve as the WO M f primary official disseminator of relevant international trade and investment information, to organize and coordinate symposia, trade fairs, exhibitions and conferences related to international business, as well as to provide foreign representatives with a temporary office support facility is hereby approved in principle.
