The 1984 UNITED NEGRO COLLEGE FUND DRIVE in Miami is now underway. I
am writing to ask for your support of this important community appeal.
Let me take this opportunity to thank you for the $15,000 contribution
the city contributed to the Fund last year. We know you were very instru-
mental in ensuring the donation. It has served to help guarantee the
survival of the UNCF's forty-two private predominantly black colleges
and universities.
Contributions become more important each year as constantly increasing
educational costs decrease the value of each dollar raised. The stability
and success of our mission are dependent upon the continuing support of
our donors. We are doing all in our power to win and hold your loyalty
and we are proud, very proud, of the job our community is doing.
This year because of cutbacks in student aid we must raise substantially
more dollars to meet the demands of increasing student enrollment. We are,
therefore, officially requesting that the City of Miami contribute
0 00 ($15,000 for the Annual Scholarship Drive and $15,000 for the Lou
awls "Parade of Stars" Telethon) to the UNCF to help in this worthy cause.
This will help us meet our 1984 statewide goal of $1.4 million. Keep in
mind that if you desire to earmark this gift for our local member insti-
tution, Florida Memorial College, all you need to do is state that when
you make your annual contribution.
As you are aware, the Fund not only helps to provide an education for
black young men and women but also serves the Hispanic community. With
that in mind, we have acquired the services of Armando Gutierrez,
president of CIA Advertising to help raise awareness in the Latin commu-
nity about the UNCF, and its mission to offer an education to all of
those in our community. With past unrest in Miami we need to do all we
can to bring about a harmonious community and we believe education is
the key.

We therefore, hope the city will find it within its means to contribute
this year. It's through the commitment of devoted persons like yourself
that the Fund continues to survive.
Again thank you for your commitment. We are patiently awaiting a response.
Sincerely,
Ra"a i e 0 9
