Home My WebLink AboutR-84-1465J- 8 4-127 2 12/20/84 rr/124/D9 RESOLUTION NO.84-1465 A RESOLUTION URGING MEMBERS OF THE DADE COUNTY DELEGATION OF THE FLORIDA STATE LEGISLATURE TO TRAVEL TO CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS, ON JANUARY 169 1985, TOGETHER WITH DESIGNATED REPRESENTATIVES OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FOR THE PURPOSE OF ATTENDING A CONFERENCE OF ACTIVE URBAN SCHOLARS AND STATE GOVERNMENT LEADERS DESIGNED TO DEVELOP AN INSTITUTIONAL MODEL FOR RESEARCH AND LOBBYING EFFORTS WHICH WILL HELP IMPROVE RELATIONS BETWEEN THE CITY AND METROPOLITAN DADE COUNTY; ALLOCATING AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $39600 FROM SPECIAL PROGRAMS AND ACCOUNTS, CONTINGENT FUND, TO COVER COSTS OF AIRFARE AND EXPENSES TO BE INCURRED BY CITY REPRESENTATIVES IN CONNECTION WITH SAID TRIP. BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. All Members of the Dade County Delegation of the Florida State Legislature are hereby urged to travel to Cambridge, Massachusetts, on January 16, 1985, together with designated representatives of the City of Miami, for the purpose of attending a conference of active urban scholars and state government leaders designed to develop an institutional model for research and lobbying efforts which will help improve relations between the City and Metropolitan Dade County. Section 2. An amount not to exceed $39600 is hereby allocated from Special Programs and Accounts, Contingent Fund, to cover costs of airfares and expenses to be incurred by City representatives in connection with said trip. None of them is aware of any institutional models for such an effort at the state or local level. However, everyone is very interested in the concept and in meeting with key members of the delegation to discuss how such an institution might be designed and funded. In this connection, I have tentatively scheduled a luncheon and afternoon meeting in Cambridge at the Kennedy School for Wednesday, January 16, 1985. The meeting will be coordinated by Jinn .Brown. He is the Director of the Center for State, Local and Intergovernmental Affairs at the Kennedy School and the Director of the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard and MIT. others who plan to attend include: Marty Linsky, Associate Director of the Kennedy Institute of Politics and former State Representative from Brookline, Massachusetts; Bernie Frieden, MIT Professor of Political Science and former Director of the Joint Center for Urban Studies of Harvard and MIT; Phil Clay, Professor of Urban Studies at MIT; and Bailey Spencer, former Staff Director for the New England Congressional Caucus. Brown hopes that Hale Champion, Dean of the Kennedy School, will be able to attend at least some portion of the meeting. He also plans to pull in one or more active figures from state government. Quite frankly, I was surprised at the high level of enthusiasm expressed by all concerned. They seemed to feel that this could become a very significant model for other urban delegations. They weren't. just being polite. It really struck them as a fresh and important idea from both a practical and academic standpoint. ,Pres Please let me know who is interested in attending from the Dade County Delegation as soon as possible. on a practice note, Eastern has a flight with one stop in Washington arriving in Boston at 11:55 a.m. There are also four return flights between 5 and 7:25 p.m. from Boston to Miami.
