First Vice -President Dear Mr. Rosencrantz:
Juan Carlos Sanchez
Second Vice -President We respectfully hereby request City funding, in cash or
services, in the amount of $35,000, for the upcoming
Secretary Seretaryolongo Calle Ocho:Open House festival on March 10, 1985.
MauricioMagarolas We would like to point out several facts in the history
Assistant Secretary of the festival that gives, in our opinion, added sup -
Manuel A. Gonzalez port to our request for assistance from the City:
Treasurer 1. The Riwanis Club of Little Havana is a non-profit
Angel Rodriguez corporation and over 93% of the festival's funding
Assistant Treasurer is derived from private sponsorship.
DIRECTORS 1964.1985 2. As requested by the City Commission, we have
expanded the festival five (5) blocks eastward to
Willy A. Bermello S.W. 7th Avenue. ,(Reason why we are requesting
Jorge C.Coro $35,000 compared to last years's $25,000)
Maximo Cruz 3. Calle Ocho:Open House is the largest Hispanic
Raul DeQuesada festival in the United States and enjoys community
wide participation. Over 800,000 persons attended
Pedro Menendez the festival in 1984.
Leslie Pantin, Jr.
4. The festival is televised and viewed throughout the
FranciscoJ. Valdes United States, projecting a very positive image of
PAST PRESIDENTS the area and the City, showing an event of such
magnitude being carried out without any incidence of
Leslie Pantin, Jr. violence and where people of all walks of life and
Jose R. Vila all ethnic backgrounds can come to celebrate in
Willy A. Bermello massive numbers.
Francisco J. Paredes
5. The event also generates wide press coverage by
newspapers, magazines, etc. locally and nationally.
In Memoriam 6. The event takes place entirely within City limits.

7. Ninety (90) per cent of the performers and one
hundred (100) per cent of the infrastructure used
in the festival (stages, sound systems, etc), are
contracted locally.
8. Calle Ocho is an event that is free to the public.
9. In one day, the festival generates over $5 million
in business within S.W. 8th Street.
10. We are audited yearly by one of the "Big Eight"
accounting firms. Arthur Andersen & Co. audited the
1984 festival. We are also audited by the City of
Miami.
We have demonstrated our continued interest in working
closely with the City of Miami for the betterment of
this community. Just recently we secured $10,000 of
funding from General Foods Corporation for improvements
in Shenandoah Park and also obtained from Libby's,
McNeill and Libby, the* donation of over 20,000 units of
nectars for the senior citizens at the Little Havana
Activities and Nutrition Centers. We hope to continue
these programs in the future.
Thank you for your thoughtful consideration of our
request.
Sincerely,
Ivan R. Llorente
