The International Festival has been sponsored by the City of Miami for over ten years. This event, previously called the International Folk Festival, is based on the International and cultural diversity of the City. The Festival features performers of the living arts from countries around the world. The International Festival is important to tourism and the economy of Miami as it draws thousands of visitors from foreign countries and South Florida. This year's grant request consists of $69,000, plus a $13,500 fee waiver for the Coconut Grove Exhibition Center. The $69,000 includes $54,000 for the expenses of the event plus $15,000 to Morty Freedman for producing the festival. The $15,000 is 5% higher than Mr. Freedman's last year's fee. The festival expenses have been increased approximately $20,000 to provide for increased advertising which is expected to increase the festival revenues enough to affect the extra.cost. Last year the City provided: $34,000 for festival expenses, $13,947 for Mr. Freedman and $11,500 for the Exhibition Center. The festival was a success and returned approximately $6,000 to the City.
