HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-85-0326J-85-337 3/27/85 RESOLUTION NO. 85-326 A RESOLUTION URGING AND REQUESTING SOUTHERN BELL, AS A MATTER OF COURTESY, TO INFORM ITS CUSTOMERS THROUGH A GENERAL MAILING DIS- TRIBUTION TO SAID CUSTOMERS, OF THE MARCH 21, 1965 ACTION BY THE INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS OF THE CITY COMMISSION WHEN THE COMMISSION VOTED TO DENY THE CITY ADMINISTRATION'S REQUEST FOR AN AMENDMENT TO CITY CODE PROVISIONS PERTAINING TO TELEPHONE SERVICE TAXES WHICH AMENDMENT WOULD HAVE RESULTED IN -rHE PAYMENT OF ADDITIONAL TAXES BY THOSE CUSTOMERS USING CERTAIN SERVICES OFFERED BY SOUTHERN BELL. BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. As a matter of courtesy, Southern Bell is hereby urged and requested to inform its customers through a general mailing distribution to said customers, of the March 21, 1985 action by the individual members of the City Commission when the Commission voted to deny the City Administration's request for an amendment to City Code provisions pertaining to telephone service taxes which amendment would have resulted in the payment of additional taxes by those customers using certain services offered by Southern Bell. Ongie Ci Clerk RGO:sl ENC: a/s ra Why you should oppose the 10010 telephone tax proposed by the City of Miami Commission The Miami City Commission is Proposing a 10% tax on all long distance calls made from the city of Miami to other locations within Florida. The City's Pry also includes taxing all other in -state calls made outside of Miami but tilled to customers in the city. The new tax will also be applied to customer access line charges. Miami even wards to tax a call you make, for instance, from Orlando to Jacksonville but billed to your home or office in the City. This new tax would be in addition to the 10% tax on local telephone service already paid by our customers in Miami. The proposed tax would affect homes and businesses and would include voice, data and private line communications. goudwm Bell and its customers contribute more in taxes to the �C�� virtually other vital of the industry, particularly community. Total taxes for Southem Bell including federal, state and local amount to an average of nearly $13.70 monthly for each telephone line. That means that taxes alone are more than the amount we charge for basic telephone service in your home. Southem Bell makes up this tax difference with revenues from other services. Southern Bell already collects $10,412,085.15 from our customers for taxes and franchise fees paid to the City of Miami. Enough is enough! Contact Mayor Ferro and your City Commissioners to voice your opposition to this tax increase. The City Commission is scheduled to meet on this issue on March 14, 1965, and again on April 11, 1985, at City Mall, City of Miami, City Commission Chambers, Dinner Key, 3500 Pan American Drive.
