MILLER DAWKINS) M.W. MLAI41- The South Florida Business League, a chartered affiliate of the ;National Business League founded by Dr. Booker T. Washington in 1900, and the largest Black businessmen's organization in the U.S.A., will sponsor a two-day conference on CARICOM, the effects of the Caribbean Basin Initiatives, and how Black businesspersons can be effectively involved. The conference is planned for May 24 and 25, 1985, at the Pavillon Hotel in Miami, Florida. it will focus on the political, economic and social systems of CARICOM countries and -the trading opportuni- ties available. The conference will end with an awards banquet on Saturday night. it is expected that many important business and government officials both from Washington and locally, will attend and support this activity. y` The League is a not -for -profit corporation. This conference and awards banquet is its first public activity. The conference will inform and educate South Florida Black businesspersons about CARICOM and trade. The Awards Banquet will highlight three awards, namely, the Booker T. Jashington Award, the Burkley G. Burrell Award and the C.J. Patterson Award. The Booker T. Washington Award will go to a member of the private sector :•rho best understands and support -,- minority efforts into the business stream. The Burkley G. Burrell Award will honor someone :.rho has inspired { minorities to enter into the business ^:ainstream in ems' spite of all the obstacles. Patterson Award will honor someone who has given unselfishly of himself or herself to support minority business efforts. Dr. Booker T. Washington was the first president and founder of the National Business League. Mr. Burkley G. Burrell was one of its vigorous leaders. Mr. C.J. Patterson is the current Chairman of the Board of the National Business League. The South Florida Lousiness League plans to invite the ambassadors to the U.S.A. and the U6N. from all the CARICODI countries. Some of the speakers and panelists will be coming from CARICOM countries. This is a big undertakling for the League and we need financial support. We would be grateful if you could arrange for a grant of $12,000 from the City of Miami to help with our expenses. A similar request is being made of t-Ietropolitan Dade County through Commissioner Barbara Carey. We intend to make this a very important event forward to your participation.
