Sergio Pereira City Manager snow Charlotte Gallogly" Director t-- J Department of Economic,Development O^tt: April 24, 1985 Mitt SUSJECT: Trade Mission To Hong Kong REFERENCES: May 9, 1985 City Come - mission Meeting ENCLOSURES: At Mayor Ferre's request, this department has worked with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council in developing a trade mission to Hong Kong which will occur June 27 - July 4, 1985 in order -to establish Miami's presence in Hong Kong by projecting our strategic location and our commercial and financial assets. In order to assure that the City Commission and you are fully briefed on this matter, information for your review has been arranged in the following manner: Background Information; Trade Mission Objectives; Trade Mission Itinerary; Trade Mission Participants and Trade Mission Costs. Background Information There is no question that the Southeast Pacific Basin is one of the world's fastest growing markets. The Pacific Basin countries have large populations, rapid growth and major interests in trade. Hong Kong is the major entrepot situated ideally in Asia and is the financial capital of Asia. Hong Kong presents opportunities for Miami businesses in the following areas: extensive trading ties, reverse investments, trade shipments, tourism, etc.' Several months ago, we approached the Hong Kong Trade Development Council to assist the City of Miami in developing a trade mission to Hong Kong. Established in 1966, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council is a quasi -government body responsible for promoting and developing world trade with Hong Kong and creating a favourable image overseas for Hong Kong as a trading partner. Trade Mission Objectives The specific objectives of this high -profile trade mission to one of the world's leading international trading centers are as follows: ',DiSCUSSIO,V A A Sergio Pereira Page 2 1) To inaugurate a series of high -profile, overseas buying -selling missions to promote foreign market diversification. 2) To communicate Miami's strategic location and its financial and business interests to Hong Kong businesses. 3) To establish and project an awareness in Miami of the wide range of economic opportunities available to us by expanding our commercial ties into our so-called "non-traditional" markets. 4) To increase local awareness of the important economic benefit to f our -community made by companies who have developed strong commercial relationships in "non-traditional" markets. Trade Mission Itinerary The itinerary for this trade mission consists of two major activities: buying y g, and selling on the part of the businesses participating in the trade mission; and meetings with the major governmental and business leaders in Hong Kong. The key Hong Kong s'.:,• officials that the City will meet with are as follows: U.S. Consul General, Chairman of the Urban Council and the Directors of the ~' Department of Trade, American Chambers of Commerce, Hong Kong Tourist Association and major Hong Kong trade manufacturers. Trade Mission Participants Letters of invitation were sent out to companies that have established ties in the Far East and are involved in the buying and 4 selling of products from and to Hong Kong. These are primarily As manufacturers, trading companies, importers/exporters and electronic firms. Additionally, several other letters were forwarded to major international businesses interested in doing buisness with Hong Kong. Trade Mission Costs The transportation and accommodations for the trip will be handled by "< Ambassador Travel, and the trip will cost approximately $1,600 per person.
