ENCLOSURES:
It is recommended that an amount
not to exceed $12,000 from Special
Programs and Accounts, Contingent
Fund, be allocated to international
Soccer, Inc., a non-profit corporation,
in support of the Miami Classic Inter-
national Youth Soccer Tournament, to
be held June 23-30, 1985.
PILE:
International Soccer, Inc. has requested that the City of Miami
provide $12,000 to co-sponsor the Miami Classic International Youth
Soccer Tournament, to be held June 23-30, 1985. The preliminary
competitions will be held at the Miami -Dade Community College,
South Campus, and Crandon Park soccer fields. The final
competition will be held at the Miami Stadium.
The tournament is expected to bring approximately 1,000 players
from each of the United States, as well as the national teams from
Brazil, Argentina, Korea, Germany and Mexico. This tournament is
unique because of the level of competition and its attempt to
create on the youth level what already exists at the pro level with
the World Cup. The Tournament will permit all of the national
teams of the foreign countries to meet and test their players prior
to going into the youth world championships. Furthermore, the
involvement of the state -select teams to compete against the
foreign national teams will give these teams a chance to develop
more serious soccer players and, thereby, encourage the development
of advanced programs within each state.
The Miami tournament is sanctioned by the Florida Youth Soccer
Association, the U.S. Youth Soccer Association, the U.S. Soccer
Federation, and FIFA, the international soccer sanctioning body.
Soccer America, the national weekly soccer magazine, will be
placing weekly advertisements up to the date of the Tournament.
The magazine has approximately 40,000 subscribers in addition to
over-the-counter sales. They will also be providing special
coverage of the Tournament, and the sponsors have ensured that the
City of Miami will receive extensive coverage as the co-sponsor of
the competition. The participation of the national teams of the
foreign countries is expected to generate international press
coverage of the competition.

Aside from the anticipated press coverage, the 1#000 players and
more than 300 accompanying family members will be housed at the
Hyatt Regency/Miami and will be spending several days in the Miami
area visiting local attractions and patronizing local restaurants.
Staff recommends a22roval of this request. If granted, staff will
ensure that the City receives appropriate coverage for— ts
participation. Additionally, the sponsors will work with the
City s Department of Parks and Recreation to ensure that the
participants in the City's summer recreation programs have an
opportunity to attend the competition.
