SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION PAGE I 2 3 4 5 2 0 RATIONALE Through the annual celebration of Women's History Month, the City of Miami has a unique opportunity to recognize the significant contributions of women in this community. Nationally and internationally, communities are focusing on the necessity to bring women of all races, ethnicities, and abilities out of the second-class status to which they are often assigned on the basis of gender. The Miami Celebration of Women's History is an opportunity to * Be a catalyst for unifying various groups * Celebrate women's past contributions * Encourage women's full participation in the future growth of Miami * Enhance culture and diversity within a major theme * Bring world class exhibits to Miami * Assure Miami's image as a city that supports, promotes and encourages women as valued members of the community This project will provide for a broader, more diverse local base, greater community participation, networking nationally and internationally, marketing amd promoting high quality, world - class events, and recognizing Miami as a leader in an emerging trend. 1 BACKGROUND TO WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH For the past several years, the University of Miami Women's Commission has worked with the Community Coalition for Women's History as well as other prganizations and institutions to coordinate the annual celebration of women's History Month each March. i The focal point of the month is March 8th, International Women's a Day. The celebration of women's History Month began in Europe to commemorate the contribution of women in the labor movement. In 1977, the National Women's History Project was begun in Santa Rosa, California, to encourage similar celebrations in the United States. Federal, state, and local governments have issued proclamations each year. (See attached Proclamation from Governor Graham.) Corporations, educational institutions, community agencies, and other organizations have sponsored programs and activities. A sample listing of 1985 programs is attached. Box 558788 .• Miami, Florida 33155 March 1985 r "What is the purpose of the Community Coalition for Women's History, and who acre we? • Our purpose and identity are merged in our name: a community of women --that is, women from the business, political, academic, and private world --who, two years ago, came together voluntarily under the umbrella of MDC::, to make the Greater ;Miami* community aware of Nat*.,nal Women's History Month. History, as most of us have learned it, is a record of significant events and periods concentrating on the political, military, and economic but, until the 19601s, with little emphasis on the importance of social history. women, for.. the most part, have been excluded from "making" such history. Our history --the stories of women who have worked inside and outside of the home --and the profound contributions made by those who are perceived as marginal and peripheral, has been consistently denied. And so, our purpose during Women's History Month, and•as the Community Coalition has been to make visible what has been invisible, to validate the lives of our foremotners,- and to learn about what women did, nave done, and continue to do --in all areas."
