The Honorable Mayor: y
To celebrate Jamaica's 23rd Independence Anniversary, a group of Jamaicans are planning a
°Jamaica Awareness Day" Festival to be held in Peacock Park, Coconut Grove, on Sunday,
August 4, 198S.
'.'
The purpose of this Festival is to bring the thousands of Jamaicans living in Miami,
together to mark this special occasion. It will also acquaint the South Florida communi-
'
a
with the colorful heritage of Jamaica by displaying it's musict food, arts, crafts and
,.
beautiful people. All musicians and artists have donated their services free of cost.
The Festival will be free to the public and is being planned on a non-profit basis.
At a meeting with Officer S. Stubbs, and Sgt. H. Bach of the Miami Police Department, the
estimated fees for police coverage of this event is $2,321.00. Representation was made
-
to the Jamaican Consul General, Mrs. Marie Wray who suggested that we ask you and the
;
City Commission, to waive these fees, as our small budget makes it impossible to make
. u
this payment. Our dream of a Jamaican Festival would not be possible.
4r
I'm therefore asking you, Mr. Mayor, to examine the possibility of the City of Miami, to
F; £
waive the fees for police coverage of this event,
j
f
Enclosed, please find a copy Qf the correspondence with the Miami Police Department.
