HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-85-0863RESOLUTION N0.8S-86& A RESOLUTION URGING THE FLORIDA LEAGUE OF CITIES, INC. TO NOMINATE MARTIN YELEN AS THE RECIPIENT FOR THE FLORIDA'S MUNICIPAL OFFICIAL OF THE YEAR "E. HARRIS DREW AWARD" WHEREAS, MARTIN YELEN has served as councilman rind/or Mayor of the City of West Miami continuously for the past twenty seven (27) years; and WHEREAS, he had served as Chairman of the West irliami Zoning Board for seven (7) years prior thereto; and WHEREAS, the City of West Miames zoning code was completely rewritten under his guidance; and WHEREAS, he has performed in an outstanding manner for the City of West Miami, not only as Councilman but in many civic capacities; and WHEREAS, MARTIN YELEN is a past President of the Dade County League of Cities, Inc., has served in all offices of the League and is presently a Director of the League; and WHEREAS, lie is a member of the Joint Liaison Committee of Ietropolitan Dade County and the Dade League of Cities, Inc. that resolves problems that arise between the Cities and the County from tirne to time; and WHEREAS, he was instrumental in persuading Metropolitan Dade County to provide franchise revenues annually to the Dade municipalities that had been lost through prior litigation; and WHEREAS, MARTIN YELEN has served as Vice-Chairmari and Chairman of the Finance and Taxation Committee of the Florida League of Cities, Inc. and has been active in the formation of the Florida League's Legislative Policy from 1975 through 1980; and WHEREAS, he has been attending the Florida League of Cities annual convention during the terms he has served as Councilman and Mayor of the City of West Miami; and WHEREAS, lie is a graduate of the University of Miami having received a B. B.A. degree and a Juris Doctorate degree and is authorized to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court; and WHEREAS, he has continuously practiced law in Dade County for the past thirty (30) years; and WHEREAS, MARTIN YELEN is a past President and a member of the Board of Directors of the Dade Safety Council; and CITY COMMISSION MEETING OF A WHEREAS, lie is a member of West Miami Citizen's Committee to "Stop Crime"; and WHEREAS, he is active as a Biscayne National Park volunteer assisting - in maintenance of the park; and WHEREAS, MARTIN YELEN was recently honored by the> City of West 11iami and Metropolitan Dade County by designating S.W. (32nd Avenue as "YELEN BOULEVARD". WHEREAS, the City of Ilia,ni is honored to recommend MARTIN YELEN, presently serving as councilman of the City of ;best Miami, Florida, for the designation of the Florida's Municipal Official of the Year "E. Harris Drew Award" f NOW,THEREFORE)BE IT RESOLVED BY 'rHE C011MISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. That the Florida League of Cities, Inc. and its appropriate officials are hereby urged to nominate MARTIN YELEN as the recipient for the Florida's Municipal Official of the Year "E. Harris Drew Award". Section 2. That a copy of this Resolution be sent to the Honorable Ray Sittig, Executive Director of the Florida League of Cities, Inc. and to the Florida League of Cities Board of Directors.
