Gentlemen:
Please accept this belated resolution of condolences for Ronald
E. McNair, which was passed by the City of Miami Commission on
February 13, 1986. The City of Miami had sent to you a
resolution of condolences for the seven members of the crew of
the Challenger. However, the McNair resolution was not ready at
that time.

achieving a permanent niche in U.S. history as a member of the ill-
fated Challenger space flight on January 28, 1986, and

WHEREAS: Despite the discrimination that he suffered early in his
life as a black man, he persevered to become a magna cum laude
graduate of North Carolina A&T, earning a doctorate in physics
from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as a Presidential
Scholar and Ford Foundation Fellow and a laser expert at the Hughes
Research Laboratories, and
WHEREAS: Ronald E. McNair, an expert in karate and an outstanding
athlete, was also an accomplished musician, as well as a brother
of the two local chapters of omega Psi Phi, Pi Nu and Sigma Alpha;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI, FLORIDA:
section 1. That official recognition be accorded to Ronald E. McNair
as a brilliant star whose light the fiery explosion failed to ex-
tinguish, but who will forever serve as a beacon of light and
inspiration to all, especially to the black youth of America.
Section 2. That an official copy of this Resolution, signed by the
Mayor and members of the Miami City Commission, be presented to the
family of

• They were quintessentially American, from big cities
ms in the north, south, west, Northeast and Midwest, re-
irious walks in life, who converged f.:r a moment in time
!r.s orbit into space, and
American dream of a future in space was shared by the
sevn astronauts with all Americans; thus, the nation
now mourns the loess of a part of itself, and
WHEREAS: The astronauts aboard the Challenger were of diverse back-
grounds, representing the demographic makeup of the American people --
a black and a Japanese -American, two women, one of them Jewish, a
civilian engineer, two veterans of the Vietnam War, and a school-
teacher from New England; they were us.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COK41SSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. That the Mayor and City Commission officially express
their grief at the passing of the seven heroes and heroines who made
up the Challenger team and an abiding faith that their contributicn
and ultimate sacrifice will be manifest in making the drear, of the
continuing exploration of outer space a reality.
Section 2. That an official copy of this Resolution, signed by the
Mayor and the City Commission, be presented to the families cf:
