Dear Mr. Odio:
I request a personal appearance at the February 13th City Commission
meeting to explain a project of the Miami River Coordinating Committee
concerning the renaming of Paradis'Point Park. The Committee has
requested a name change to Miami River Rapids Park because we feel it
is more historically appropriate. The name change has been approved
by the Memorial Committee and the Parks and Recreation Department.
The site has been selected for an historic marker by the City's Heritage
Conservation Board. Attached is a copy of the text of that marker.
The Miami River Coordinating Committee is also negotiating with the
owner of the two properties on either side of the park and the Florida
Department of Natural Resources Land Acquisition Section concerning a
land swap which would involve a state-owned piece of property further
up the river. The swap would increase the size of the park by at least
two times its present size. Both the appraisal of the private pieces
and the state piece have been funded, and the state appraisal has been
completed. Plans are underway for the completion of the private apprai-
sal.
I look forward to the opportunity of explaining these matters more
fully at the City Commission meeting on February 13th.
Sincerely,
/WW. f4w.

MIAMI RIVER RAPIDS
The north fork of the Miami River
began at the rapids that were once
located a short distance west of this
site. The rapids were created by water
from the Everglades spilling over a six
foot high natural ridge. These rapids
ceased in 1912 when the Miami Canal
was built as part of the Everglades
drainage project.
The man-made Miami Canal com-
mences at Twenty-fourth Avenue, by-
passing the original north fork that
continues to meander south of this

park, where the water was dammed
and used as power for turning the mill
wheel. Manufacturing coontie starch,
made from the root of a native Florida
pineland plant, is probably the earliest
known industry in Dade County. The
mill employed twenty-five people and
reportedly earned $24,000 in one year.
"Ferguson's Florida Arrow Root" was
sold throughout the United States.
The mill was abandoned because of
hostilities caused by the Third
Seminole War.
