April 1st, 1986 Mr. Alberto Ruder Special Events Assistant City of Miami Miami, Florida Dear Mr. Ruder: 57 This letter is to request that we appear in person in front of the City of Miami Commissioners on April 10, 1986. As I understand, we are in the agenda for that date, requesting a permit to sell beer and merchandise (T-shirts, art and craft made by our participants,sou- venirs, food, etc.) at the FESTIVAL 20 DE MAYO which will take place on May 17-18 at the Jose Marti Park. This will be the second annual Festival, in which we 819 S.W.12ch Avenue commemorate the Older American Month and the Cuban In- Mism. Florida 33130 dependence Day. The festival is done to raise the needed (305)858-2610 funds to continue operating our eleven centers through- out Dade County. With the cuts in the state and local budgets, these funds are extremelly needed. Also, and very important, this festival serves to.unite the commu- RafaelviAaverde nit the elder. and the young generation.' „, Y. Y g BwrdofDkeaon Last year, as your files will attest, the festival was Rourio A. Kennedy co -sponsored by the City of Miami. It was the first fes- ChairPenon tival celebrated at the Jose Marti Park, and right after- wifn:do(Willy)oorr wards, we made a formal request to Mr. Carl Kern to re- "L,,,,edo peat this festival this year and every year on. We were under the impression that everything was approved, and Manuel Dias the City of Miami would continue to co-sponsor this Fes - Manuel M. Medina tival. But apparently, with the change of personnel, we W.E. Gontil z, Jr. now have to start from square one. RaQMardne: On that day, we will ask the City of Miami to continue Dawid>~ncher being our co-sponsors so that we may raise the necessa- Anwnio Pups ry funds for our centers. We will request the permits Atbemcirdenas to sell beer and merchandise; and that all fees be waived for the police, fire, rescue departments, solid waste CarlmBenim and park personnel needed, just as they were last year. Wilbert T. Holloway Dr. RaW R. Cuadrado. D.Ph. The Festival 20 de Mayo was a very successful festival that got all the community involved. It was a family jaefinaCarboneu Execwtivevicerresident festival, in which for the very first time the City of Miami and the City of Hialeah played a softball game against each other (the Mayors and Commissioners). We had a beautiful artistic and musical show with reknown singers, fun games for the entire family, orchestras to dance, sports competitions, delicious food, refreshments, beer and much entertainment. It was a true community festival that did a lot of good to the park, and genera- ted a lot of positive publicity to Miami. We did not 110 have one single incident in the two day event. un"" ray Member ►goncy ` rtarn ii s r1.r. mrm-mmnn.imdrnn.xrtnnrnnn D Yr (Page #2) April 1st, 1986 We expect the same results this year. I doubt, seriously, if my playing would have had a positive effect as to the "scores." The City must get it's "Act" together! The County defeated us in football, an now, Hialeah has managed to do the same in softball. We may have to go to "Domino Park" to get someone to win one for the City. It is activities such as this that draw the citizens an a ectecl officals together,_ where we—al1 can plan for happy 4qR:i. You have my support as a CommUssioner and even after.
