BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. N.W. 23 Avenue between N.W. 7 Street and N.W. 11 Street is hereby co -designated as "Don Carlos de la Torre y Huerta Avenue". Section 2. Al Ruder W DON CARLOS DE LA TORRE Y HUL'RTA, a noted educator, naturalist of international fame and a worthy politician, was born in the City of Matanzas, Cuba, on May 15, 1858. He died in the City of Havana at the advanced age of 92. His extensive knowledge, great moral character, his upholding of truth and justice, and his love for Cuba made him one of the most notable, loved and respected figures of his time. In 18769 he received Bachelors degree from the "Inatituto de la Habana" (Havana College). In 1881,'he graduated from Vhe University of Havana, receiving his Doctorate degree in Natural Sciences, and 9 honors. He later become Professor and Dean of this University. His thesis "Distribucion de la,Fauna Malacologica Terrestre en Cuba" won him honors and received great recognition as a scientific document of great value. He received a -degree from the Central University of Madrid, in Spain, where he taught Natural History for several. years. He also was'a distinguished Professor at the Instituto de San Juan (College), City of San Juan, Puerto Rico. The fame he,gained as distinguished Professor was such that the Universities\of Harvard, Cambridge and Massachusset honored him by presenting him with honorary degrees (Doctor Honoris.Causa) His scientific research were quite notable. His books on the subjects of learning to read, Moral and Civic Behavior, Cuban History and Cuban Geography were used in the public and private school systems in Cuba for many years. His books on Reading and Moral and Civic Behavior were used in the public school system in many Latin-American Countries. Also widely acclaimed were his books no Medicine, Pharmacy and Natural Sciences. For his excellent and outstanding work, he received awards at all international scientific and educational conventions, in which he served as a representative for Cuba. He spent his last years in politics, as the very good, just an outstanding mayor of the City of Havana and Secretary of Educ at ion of the Republic of Cuba. Don Carlos de la Torre y Huerta did not preach war, nor did he quote of revolutions, but his teaching did help to create a new conscience among Cubans and other Countries of Latin -America, which considered him one of their great ci'vic�-leaders. He wrote many notable words in which his philosophy, his scientific knowledge and culture came to light. He was truly a Teacher of men, educated by him so that they would be free.
