At its meeting of April 22, 1986, the City Commission authorized
the.City Manager to submit an application to the U.S. Department of
Housing and Urban Development for the proposed 12th Year (1986-87)
Community Development Block Grant Program. The application
included $31,000 for the Overtown Historic Preservation Program and
$34,000 for the Senior Security Program, a housing related project.
These projects are not public services (social services). and
therefore, are not part of the fifteen percent (15%) cap on social
services. The social services projects are discussed as a separate
item.
The Black Archives History and Research Foundation of South
Florida, Inc. operates the Overtown Historic Preservation Program.
The agency surveys, organizes, collects and processes historical
records relating to the development of the Culmer-Overtown area and
makes this data available to the public for research and
information purposes.
Jewish Family Services of Greater Miami, Inc. operates the housing
related Senior Security Program. The agency installs security
systems (locks, deadbolts, etc.) to elderly crime victims. The
agency works in conjunction with the City of Miami Police
Department, which provides reports of elderly crime victims and
recommends security measures to deter future crime. This project
provides its services on a Citywide basis.
The attached resolution formalizes the intent of the City
Commission to allocate the aforementioned $65,000 to these two
previously approved agencies.
