A RESOLUTION ESTABLISHING A
{
POLICY ON THE PLACEMENT OF
CURRENT AND FUTURE MONUMENTS,
PLAQUES AND STATUARY IN THE
CITY OF MIAMI.
WHEREAS, throughout its history, the City of Miami has
received and/or caused to be erected monuments, plaques and
statuary commemorating significant events and the culture
heritage of its diverse population; and
WHEREAS, the placement of these monuments, plaques and
statuary must be handled in an historically appropriate manner
which enhances understanding and appreciation of the person(s) or
event(s) commemorated;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. Priority shall be given to retaining all current
and future monuments, plaques and statuary within the City of
Miami.
Section 2. All current and future monuments, plaques and
statuary shall be made in an historically appropriate highly
visible b publicly accessible location including the following:
a) Along Biscayne Boulevard, in its current and future
configuration, north of Chopin Plaza to approximately NE
Street; or
b) In public plazas or urban spaces dedicated to the
person(s), event(s) or ideology being commemorated; or
c) In only those public parks dedicated to the person(s),
event(s) or ideology being commemorated; or

d) In institutional religious or community centers

related to the person(s) event(s) or ideology being commemorated
i> Section 3. Prior to the acceptance by the City Commission,
of any future monuments, plaques, or statuary, the location,

The following policy is proposed for the handling of current and
future monuments, plaques and statuary in the City.
1. Priority should be given to retaining all currently held
monuments, plaques and statuary in the City.
2. Placement of current and future monuments, plaques and
statuary shall be in historically appropriate, highly
visible public locations including the following:
i) On Biscayne Blvd in its current and future

configuration.

ii) Public plazas dedicated to the person(s), event(s) or
ideology being commemorated.

iii) In only those public parks dedicated to the person(s),_

Iv) In institutional, religious or community centers
related to the person(s), event(s) or ideology being

3. Prior to acceptance by the City Commission, of any future
monuments, plaques or statuary, the location, manner of
placement and funding shall be determined.
Pursuant to this, the following is a summary of the status of the

- San Martin (Bust) (Argenine)
- Simon Bolivar (Bust) (Venezuela)
- Ruben Dario (Bust) (Nicaragua)
- Juan Pablo Duarte (Bust) (Dominican Republic)
- Admiral Miguel Grau (Bust) (Peru)
- Inca Garcilaso Dela Vega (Bust) (Peru)

Ten Commandments With a religious or other

offer.
War Memorial and Flagpoles Proposed locations in Legion
(Monument) Park and Coconut Grove have
been declined by Veteran's
Council of Dade County. We
are continuing to work with
them to find a mutually
acceptable site.
