HomeMy WebLinkAboutM-87-0189a :2 al j' February 12, 1987 To whom it may concerns I am writing this letter in an attempt to let my feelings be known in regard to what is presently taking place in the Fire Department. I am a Cuban -American who has been a fire fighter with the City of Miami for six years. I have been afforded the same oppor- tunities as anyone else and never been repressed in reaching my desires and goals with the fire department. The fire department is governed by rules, regulations and abi- lity to perform and getting along with your brother fire fighters. The incapability and/or unwillingness of some members, regardless of race or nationality, should not be tolerated and the excuse of discrimination be dermitted to be used as cover by any of its members. The actions of some of these individuals has hurt the morale and has tarnished the reputation of the fire department, and we should take action not to let this happen. While discrimination and bigotry unfortunately are a common place in life, it also comes in all colors and nationalities. The only ones being discriminated against are the Anglo-fire fighters in hiring and promotional tests. In conclusion, I would like to say that I have been a proud member of the f ire department and I would hate to see any false accusations further hurt its fine standing in this community. Sincerely, MIGUEL A. Dawkins City Commissioner CITY OF MIAMI. FLORMA i -FF, ;4 INTER -OFFICE MfEMdk*irjW0 15dl JAN 28 DATE January VILE SUBJECT ALLEGED DISCRIMINATION IN THE MIAMI FIRE DEPT. REFERENCES. ENCLOSURES January 27, 1987, S.A.L.A.D. held a press conference to say that there is the appearance of practice of discrimination being carried on in the Miami Fire Department. The meetinq was attened by members of; the Fire Department, Miami Firefighters, SALAD, and a representative from Mayor Suarez's staff. Miami firefighters both Hispanic and Black have come into my office complaining about being victimized by "INSTITUTIONAL RACISM", verbal abuse by superiors, mental anguish bought on by constant harrassment and other complaints. The Firefighters refused to put anything in writing because they feared retribution, at least this is the•reasons they gave me for not putting their complaints in writing. Now that CBO has decided to make descrimination in the Miami Fire Department a public issue, it is time to have a public hearing on discrimination in the Miami Fire Department. Please schedule a public hearing at the February 12, 1987 Commission meeting. Regardless if there is discrimination or not in the Miami Fire Department. Be it real or imaginary the fear by; Ron McCray, Leo Garcia, Harry Payne, Jose Estevanell is real, and these men cannot fight fires in an environment controlled by "FEAR". I wish you would see that; McCray, Garcia, Payne, nor Estevanell are harrassed because they choose to speak out against what they feel is unfair working conditions. mrc cc: A. E. Perez-Lugones
