HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-87-0134J-`87-140 1129/87 RESOLUTION NO. 87&-"134* A RESOLUTION RATIFYING, APPROVING, AND CONFIRMING THE WAIVER OF ALL USER FEES AT THE COCONUT GROVE EXHIBITION CENTER, EXCLUDING ANY DIRECT COSTS, FOR THE SUNSHINE STATE GOLDEN GLOVES BOXING TOUR- NAMENT, MARCH 4 THROUGH 7, 1987, AND FURTHER ALLOCATING AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $12,000 FROM THE SPECIAL PROGRAMS AND ACCOUNTS, QUALITY OF LIFE FUND TO COVER SAID COSTt WHEREAS, the Sunshine State Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament provides special athletic competition to the youth of the commu- nity and attracts national attention to the area; and WHEREAS, the City Commission, in support of the State Golden Gloves Directors effort to bring this tournament to the Coconut Grove Exhibition Center has authorized the waiver of all user fees, March 4-7, 1987, by Motion M 86-732, adopted September 11, 1986; and WHEREAS, funds in an amount not to exceed $12,000 are available in the Special Programs and Accounts, Quality of Life Fund; and WHEREAS, the City Manager and the Director of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Public Facilities recommend that said funds be utilized for the waiver of user fees for the Coconut Grove Exhibition Center, excluding direct costs; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The waiver of all user fees, excluding direct cost, for use of the Coconut Grove Exhibition Center for the Sunshine State Golden Gloves Tournament to be held March 4-7, 1987, is hereby ratified, approved, and confirmed. An amount not to exceed $12,000 is hereby allocated from Special Programs and Accounts, Quality of Life Fund, to the Sunshine State Golden Gloves to cover the cost of all user fees at the Coconut Grove Exhibition Center for the Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament. Odio V,' ' City Manager Recommendation: DATE: FEB 4 1987 FILE SUBJECT Proposed Resolution Rati- fying Motion 86-732 for Florida Golden Gloves. REFERENCES: ENCLOSURES: 31 It is respectfully recommended that a resolution be adopted ratifying Motion 86-732 passed by the City Commission on September 11, 1986, to waive all user fees at the Coconut Grove Exhibition Center, excluding any direct costs, for the Sunshine State Golden Gloves Boxing Tour- nament on March 4 through 7, 1987; and allocating an amount not to exceed $12,000 from the Special Programs and Accounts, Quality of Life Fund. Background: The Department of Parks, Recreation and Public Facilities has been co -sponsoring the Florida Golden Gloves National Tournament for the past twelve (12) years. This special boxing event attracts over 300 amateur boxers who will participate in competitive matches with the winners going on to possible Olympic trials. This year the four night event will attract over 6,000 spectators and will be extensive- ly covered by local and regional television and other news media. This event affords the Department of Parks, Recreation and Public Fa- cilities the opportunity to showcase the "Magic City" as a youth ori- ented recreation and sports community. Through the extensive coverage by the news media, the Golden Gloves Tournament will convey positive images of Miami's concern for the future of it4s youth to I the entire nation. Approval of the proposed resolution will permit the sponsors to finalize the schedules; arrange for the necessary transportation, and initiate a comprehensive promotion program.
