Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission FROM!Cesar H. Recommendation It is respectfully recommended that the City Commission adopt the attached resolution approving the construction of a monument to Cuban Women Political Prisoners by E1 Presidio Politico Cubano de Mujeres in Jose Marti Park. Background: The Department of Parks, Recreation and Public Facilities has prepared the attached resolution formalizing Motion 86-471 o` June 12, 1986. That action granted the request of El Presidio Politico Cubano de Mujeres to erect a monument in honor of Cuban women political prisoners in Jose Marti Park, provided that no City funds 'would be required. Since that time, the organization has completed the design of the monument and begun raising funds to cover construction costs. Thus. it is now appropriate to give formal authorization to proceed with those efforts. • The department has found both the design and the concept well in keeping with the aesthetics and ideology of Jose Marti Park, in accordance with the new policy concerning statuary and monuments (Resolution No. 86-827, adopted. October 7, 1986). Approval of the attached legislation will grant official status to the fund raising efforts of this organization. It will also ensure that all applicable building regulations are followed. Once construction is completed, a resolution will be prepared to formally accept this gift.
