A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION URGING THE MIAMI-DADE
COUNTY ("COUNTY") DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION AND PUBLIC WORKS
TO TAKE ANY AND ALL ACTIONS NECESSARY TO CONVERT THE PORTION OF
MATILDA STREET BETWEEN OAK AVENUE AND GRAND AVENUE TO
PERMANENTLY BE A ONE-WAY STREET HEADING NORTH; REQUESTING THAT
THE COUNTY RENDER A FINAL DECISION AS TO THE CITY OF MIAMI'S
REQUEST, PURSUANT TO ITS AUTHORITY TO REGULATE TRAFFIC
COUNTYWIDE, INCLUDING WITHIN THE CITY OF MIAMI; DIRECTING THE CITY
CLERK TO TRANSMIT A CERTIFIED COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE PUBLIC
OFFICIALS AND INDIVIDUALS STATED HEREIN.
WHEREAS, Matilda Street is located in the City of Miami's Coconut Grove
neighborhood; and
WHEREAS, many locals, visitors, pedestrians, and families walk throughout Coconut
Grove including down Matilda Street to enter the commercial district of Coconut Grove; and
WHEREAS, Coconut Grove Elementary is located on the portion of Matilda Street
between Oak Avenue and Grand Avenue; and
WHEREAS, the portion of Matilda Street between Oak Avenue and Florida Avenue is a
one-way street heading north; and
WHEREAS, the portion of Matilda Street between Florida Avenue is generally a two-way
street except on school days when it becomes a one-way street heading north from the hours of
7:00-8:45 AM and 1:45-3:30 PM, except on Wednesdays when during the afternoon hours it
becomes a one-way street heading north from 1:45-2:30 PM; and
WHEREAS, Florida Avenue ends at Matilda Street and provides an option to either turn
left or turn right unless it is during one of the aforementioned times where Matilda Street
becomes a one-way street heading north and motorists are prohibited from turning right heading
south; and
WHEREAS, the varying times of when approximately three hundred twenty-five (325)
feet of a two-way street becomes a one-way street is not readily apparent and creates
significant life -safety risks to all the locals, visitors, pedestrians, and families that are walking
through Coconut Grove; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission wishes to request that the Miami -Dade County
("County") Department of Transportation and Public Works ("DTPW') convert the entire portion
of Matilda Street between Oak Avenue and Grand Avenue to permanently be a one-way street
heading north; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-96.1 of the Code of Miami -Dade County, Florida, the
County has authority over traffic engineering services and traffic control devices within the City
of Miami ("City"); and
WHEREAS, the City is requesting County approval to convert the portion of Matilda
Street between Oak Avenue and Grand Avenue to permanently be a one-way street heading
north;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The City Commission urges the County take any and all actions necessary to
convert the portion of Matilda Street between Oak Avenue and Grand Avenue to permanently
be a one-way street heading north, and to render a final decision as to this request pursuant to
the County's authority over traffic in the City.
Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to forward a copy of this Resolution to County
Mayor Daniella Levine -Cava, DTPW Director Eulois Cleckley, and the members of the Board of
County Commissioners.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
