RECOMMENDATION:
It is respectfully recommended that the City Commission adopt the
attached resolution authorizing the City Manager to execute an
agreement, in a form acceptable to the City Attorney, with the
Miami Design District Association, providing funds in the amount
of $175,000 to assist the Miami Design District Association in
performing marketing and business development activities to
support the development and continued economic health of the
Miami Design District. Funding is to come initially from the
City's Special Programs and Accounts Fund, to be replaced with
funds the Department of Off Street Parking has agreed to transfer
to the City on October 1, 1987.
BACKGROUND::
City administrative staff has analyzed the request for funding
presented by the Design District Association at the March 12,
1987 Commission meeting. Also, at that time, the Commission
directed that meetings be held with the Department of Off -Street
Parking relating to funding the District request. Based upon
this analysis and these meetings, it has been determined that a
$175,000 level of assistance be provided to the Miami Design
District Association as stipulated in a proposed assistance.
agreement.
Generally stated, the funding assistance will allow the
Association to perform marketing and business development
activities deemed essential for the continued economic well-being
of the Design District at a crucial time in its development. The
funding will be a bridge to the goal of financial self-
sufficiency, and the Association will be required to take
specific steps toward that goal as part of its contract
