ENCLOSURES:
RECOMMENDATION:
It is respectfully recommended that the City -Commission adopt the
attached resolution authorizing the closure of certain streets
for the U.S.T.S. Bud Light Triathlon (foot race and bike race
segments) to be held May 3, 1987: subject to the issuance of
permits by the Departments of Police and Fire, Rescue and
Inspection Services.
BACKGROUND:
The Department of Parks, Recreation and Public Facilities has
prepared the attached legislation. City staff from this
department, and that of Police, Fire and Community Development,
have been working with officials of CAT Sports, Inc. and the
Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce to coordinate preparations for
the first event of the U.S. Bud Light Triathlon Series, to be
held on May 3, 1987 in Miami. This event was previously held in
Ft. Lauderdale and is the opening of the series, which will
continue to 12 other major cities across the nation.
On February 12, 1987, the City Commission adopted Resolution No.
87-174, allocating up to $15,000 for City services required in
support of this event, which will be broadcast on ESPN cable
television.
The Triathlon will consist of a 1.5 kilometer swim, a 40
kilometer bike race and a 10 kilometer foot race. Bicentennial
Park will serve as Triathlon headquarters and the transition area
for participants between segments. Organizers expect 1500
participants and 4000 spectators. A staggered start will be
utilized to accommodate all participants.

The bicycling portion is scheduled to start at approximately 7:50
a.m. and end at 11:00 a.m. The course runs from Bicentennial
Park, south along Miami and Brickell Avenues, west across the
Rickenbacker Causeway to Crandon Park, and will return along
similar routes. The running portion is set for approximately
8:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. from the City park, across the MacArthur.
Causeway and back.
Police and the organizers have designed both courses so as to
ensure the safety of participants while minimizing traffic
disruption. To that end, only portions of major thoroughfares
will be closed so as to allow vehicular traffic in open lanes.
• Supplemental approval has also been requested from the Florida
Department of Transportation and other affected local agencies.
Organizers are enthusiastic at the selection of these routes
which will enable network broadcasts to highlight some of the
most scenic views of the City of Miami.
