AMUSEMENTS OF AMERICA GROWS AS FAMILY BUSINESS,
FLOURISHES AS INNOVATIVE COMPANY
Amusements of America is one of North America's largest
amusement companies with four separate operating midway units and
three fair routes from Canada to Florida.
Begun in 1941 with the purchase of a single Ferris wheel,
the company today owns and operates more than 140 portable rides
and attractions, 150 trucks, 160 trailers and 28 diesel power
plants. Its ride inventory, one of the most complete in the
amusement industry, includes more than a dozen "spectacular*
rides.

Founder's Dream A Family Business
Amusements of America was established by Anthony Vivona, an
Italian immigrant whose dream of owning a family business was
realized with the initial Ferris wheel which he booked at small
church bazaars and local festivals, along with his ice cream
trucks. With Anthony's death in 1943 his widow, Catherine'Rose
Vivona, assumed the company reins along with her three oldest
sons and established herself as matriarch of the amusement
industry until her untimely death in 1965.
As the company added new equipment the route grew
substantially, spreading from New Jersey to Sumter, SC by 1954.
By 1957 all five Vivona brothers presided as company officers:
and another major: fair: date, Charleston, SC, appeared on the
company's fair itinerary.
In the early 1960a Amusements of America added the Georgia
State Fair in Macon to its growing list of fairs, as well as key
dates in Florence, SC; Frederick, MD and later Ottawa, Canada and
Middletown, NY. The company success has continued into the 198O8
with new fair dates and new equipment, all of which have helped
establish Amusements of America as one of the industry leaders.
Innovation Cited As Growth Factor
With Amusements of America's growth surge during the 1960s,
the company took on the role of industry innovator. During the
- more -
latter part of that decade-, Amusements of America became the
first carnival company in North America to own and move a
Schwarzkopf Swiss -Bob on a weekly basis, once considered an
unreasonable feat. However, as other amusement companies
followed suit, Amusements of America added a Schwarzkopf Jet -Star
roller coaster for its major fair dates, thus remaining an
industry pioneer.
Today, the company's role remains that of an amusement
industry innovator as perhaps the only mobile carnival company
with a Hully-Gully, another European "spectacular" ride feature.
Amusements of America's innovative tendencies have been a major
factor in the company's continuing success, according to John
Vivona, president.
Said Vivobas wVle've earned a reputation as an innovative
i
company within this industry and we intend to continue moving in
that direction. For us, the business never becomes stale because
there are always newer, more exciting rides and attractions under
u
development. As far as we're concerned, when you cease being
r
different in this business, you cease to be.•
Amusements of America plays more than 125 separate dates
among its four midway units. Its success record is underscored
by its retention of key accounts on a consistent basis. In fact,
the company still holds contracts for many of its earliest fairs,
spanning more than 25 years of uninterrupted renewals and
profitability.
