Japanese Garden and authorizing an allocation of $5,000 from
Special Programs and Accounts, Matching Funds for Grants Fund, to

Background:
The Department of Parks, Recreation and Public Facilities has
prepared the attached legislation in support of the Friends of
the Japanese Gardens, Inc. This not -for -profit organization was
formed for the sole purpose of providing support for the City -
owned Japanese Garden on Watson Island. This includes conducting
fund-raising events such as the Annual Spring Festival, seeking
corporate donations, and providing the unique cultural element
needed for the maintenance and repair of this City facility.
The Friends of the Japanese Garden has sought and obtained a
grant from the Ricoh Corporation in the amount of $3,000. They
have also requested that the City provide an additional sum, not
to exceed $50,000., to continue their efforts and operations on
our behalf. Said funds will be used by the "Friends" for
continued maintenance and promotions of the Garden, subject to
the normal administrative guidelines and directives.
This is a companion item to an ordinance appropriating said funds
from the Park Development Fund.
