RT- A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO ACCEPT A GRANT IN THE AMOUNT OF $3,000 FROM THE RICOH CORPORATION ON BEHALF OF THE FRIENDS OF THE JAPANESE GARDENS, INC., A NOT - FOR -PROFIT ORGANIZATION, FURTHER AUTHORIZING AN ALLOCATION NOT TO EXCEED $5000 FROM SPECIAL PROGRAMS AND ACCOUNTS, MATCHING FUNDS FOR GRANTS FUND, TO SAID NOT -FOR -PROFIT ORGANIZATION, SAID FUNDS TO BE UTILIZED FOR FUND-RAISING EFFORTS, MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR OF THE CITY -OWNED JAPANESE GARDEN ON WATSON ISLAND; SUBJECT TO AND CONTINGENT UPON COMPLIANCE WITH SUCH CONDITIONS AND LIMITATIONS AS MAY BE PRESCRIBED BY THE CITY OF MIAMI. WHEREAS, the Friends of the Japanese Gardens, Inc. is a not - for -profit organization that was formed for the sole purpose of raising funds and providing financial and operational support for the repair and maintenance of the City -owned Japanese Garden on Watson Island; and WHEREAS, said organization has obtained a grant from the Ricoh Corporation in the amount of $3,000 for said purpose; and WHEREAS, it is appropriate that the City of Miami provide an additional sum in the amount of $5,000 to support the continuance of this community involvement in a public property; and WHEREAS, said funds are available from Special Programs and Accounts, Matching Funds for Grants Fund; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The City Manager is hereby authorized to accept a i grant in the amount of $3,000 from the Ricoh Corporation on behalf of the Friends of the Japanese Gardens, Inc., a not -for - profit corporation. Section 2. An amount not to exceed $5,000 is hereby allocated from Special Programs and Accounts, Matching Funds for Grants Fund, as a grant to said not -for -profit corporation for fund-raising efforts, maintenance and repair of the City -owned Japanese Garden on Watson Island. Odio, City Manager DATE: J U N 8 41987 FILE: SUBJECT: Grants for the Friends of the Japanese Gardens REFERENCES: ENCLOSURES: Recol ndation: It is respectfully recommended that the City Commission adopt the attached resolution accepting a grant in the amount of $3,000 from the Ricoh Corporation on behalf of the Friends of the Japanese Garden and authorizing an allocation of $5,000 from Special Programs and Accounts, Matching Funds for Grants Fund, to the "Friends;" said funds to be utilized for maintenance of and repairs to the City -owned Japanese Garden on Watson Island. Background: The Department of Parks, Recreation and Public Facilities has prepared the attached legislation in support of the Friends of the Japanese Gardens, Inc. This not -for -profit organization was formed for the sole purpose of providing support for the City - owned Japanese Garden on Watson Island. This includes conducting fund-raising events such as the Annual Spring Festival, seeking corporate donations, and providing the unique cultural element needed for the maintenance and repair of this City facility. The Friends of the Japanese Garden has sought and obtained a grant from the Ricoh Corporation in the amount of $3,000. They have also requested that the City provide an additional sum, not to exceed $50,000., to continue their efforts and operations on our behalf. Said funds will be used by the "Friends" for continued maintenance and promotions of the Garden, subject to the normal administrative guidelines and directives. This is a companion item to an ordinance appropriating said funds from the Park Development Fund. 87-541
