DOUVERTY CITY ATTORNEY CITI1it' SIGN MEETING OF JUL RESOLUTION No. :.:. REMARKS: '' 1931 JUI. •9 F ' 44 April 20, 1987 The Hon. Xavier Suarez Mayor City of Miami 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, F1 33133 Dear Mayor Suarez, Jamaica Awareness, Inc. a non-profit Florida Corporation is preparing to celebrate Jamaica's 25th Independence Anniversary by staging the Third Annual Jamaica Awareness Reggae Festival in Bicentennial Park on Sunday, August 2nd, 1987. This festival highlights a week of cultural events planned to celebrate this occasion. In just two years, this festival has grown to become the biggest reggae festival in the U.S.A., attracting over 30,000 in 1986, many of whom were visitors to the City of Miami. ' Unfortunately, City of Miami fees for staging this event have increased each year -- from $2,200 in 1985 to $6,600 in 1986. Presently, estimates from The Parks and Recreation Department indicate that this year's fee to the city will run as high as $13,000.00, for a festival that is free to the public. Although we are seeking corporate sponsorship for this event, we are finding it difficult to meet The City's fees and we are looking to the office of the Mayor and the City Commission to waive the fees for in -kind services, ie. Police, Sanitation, Fire etc. We look forward to hearing from you in the near future to the mutual benefit of all. Sincerely, Jamaica Awareness Inc. By: C. Eddy Edwards President cc: J.L.
