For the first time the direct mar- keting objectives of corporations can be met in more than one continent with one unique and special event. Major consumer product and service companies, always in need of an association with the popular trends in our social and cultural environment have found that sports are a very popular vehicle. Companies whose products and services must appeal to ... and be identified with...the average consumer have traditionally sought to associate with popular, broad -base sports, recreation, and leisure activities. Sports and recreation are a good, clean and fun area of product endorsement, and though highly competitive in nature, sports involvement has provided the highest level of consumer identification for the lowest marketing dollar investment. Sports provide the ideal product or service endorsement, public relations, advertising, and promotional vehicle for the ultimate in successful consumer visibility. The bicycle, with all of its attributes including recreation that is low cost, fun, economical and healthy, combined with the natural urge to compete has created an entirely new sport that can be utilized by the consumer -oriented product or service company to reach their market in a wholesome, legitimate, and economical manner. AND NOW, WE WOULD LIKE TO INTRODUCE THE TOUR OF THE AMERICAS. Starting in VAIGhcia, Venezuela and ton- tinuing to Caracas, the TOUR -OF THE AMERICAS will provide the ienezuelan market with a race that alone would attract international attention. However, the over one hundred riders from Europe, North and South America, and Australia will board an aircraft in Caracas and proceed to Jacksonville, Florida, where they will compete in stages that will take them to Orlando ( the home of Walt Disney World), Tampa/St. Petersburg, and then across the peninsula to Palm Beach. The last leg continues on southward through Boca Raton, Fort Lauder- dale, with the Tour finishing in Miami. The nine -stage race to be run from February 20 through February 28, 1988, will cover 788 miles, two continents, at least nine major metro markets, and a combined population of some twenty-five million persons. The prize money offered to the racers will be in excess of $150,000, making this race one of the riehest in the world of cycling. The TOUR OF THE AMERICAS will have as its premier attraction AND spokesman the first and only American to ever win the prestigious Tour de France . Greg Le - Mond. Mr. LeMond is currently under contract to support the TOUR OF THE AME- RICAS in every way possible including competing in the event. The premier running of the TOUR OF THE AMERICAS will provide to its commercial sponsors in both North and South America an unequalled opportunity to associate with an event which touches the average "person in the street," which is non- controversial, is perceived to be healthy, wholesome and affordable; and most importantly, gives a sponsor a unique capability to create a marketing program that is "neighborhood" oriented. All of these benefits plus the more obvious attractiveness of an event that will capture both the sports and general news media attention for a period of time longer than any other sports marketing vehicle offered today. We believe that this is possible because: 1. The appeal of bicycling as a sport is universal; regardless of economic or social status. 2. Cycling represents the best of healthy, affordable, and practical recrea- tion throughout the world. 3. Cycling is common to all nationalities and cultures and is free of all political influence. 4. Cycling has been used by governments and educators to reach the youth of the world to promote strong anti -smoking and anti -drug campaigns. We believe that the TOUR OF THE AMERICAS will establish a new bridge joining the peoples of two great continents and will become an instrument for peace. 91 MERMAN BLANCO r. lh. W61 A) ERWIN M. O ftWMV As the State Bicycle Coordinator 1 look forward to the TWR OF THE AMERICAS professional race series you are bringing to Florida during the last week of February# 1988. You have spy pledge to assist this event in any way that I can. It is my belief that the Tour of the Americas has the potential to draw significant media and public attention to the rising popularity of bicycle racing, and of bicycling activities in general. This is in keeping with one of the original ten goals of the Florida Bicycle Program, "to actively promote bicycle racing statewide". It will take a successful event of the caliber you propose to popularize bicycle racing alive in Florida. Based on our discussion, you will require all racers to use ANSI approved hardshell bicycle helmets during all training and event riding. We are making a hard push for bicycle helmets, and to have our "sports heron" wearing helmets in all photos taken will be vital to our program. We also understand that you will do your best to have at least one top rider, such as America's Tour de France champion Greg LeMond, work with us for a period of 1-2 hours to produce bicycle safety TV spots. We also understand that your sponsors, Mr. German Blanco of Valencia, Venezuela and Dr. Ervin M. Vasquez, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, will be assisting with the development of bicycle education programs. This sensitivity to the comprehensive needs of bicycling programs in Florida is most appreciated. The public safety effort you are proposing will go a long way toward gaining significant community backing of your event. For the long term growth of your annual race, such efforts will build lasting goodwill. We have already discussed the significant past disappointments Florida communities have had with race and tour promoters that have pulled out at the last instant. Based on our meetings, I an reassured of your long term financial and professional commitment to having the Tour of the Americas become a major success. You have ass fine team. This race sounds very interesting and one in which I hope we can participate. We have had several bicycle races in our City which have received favorable media attention and spectator interest. I would anticipate that your proposed race would also be well received. Our City will be celebrating its Centennial in 1988, and there are many • events being planned. Therefore, to assure proper coordination, we will need to know your specific plans and needs. For example, will any streets need to be closed and secured. If so, the expenses for Police services, clean up, etc., need to be addressed.
