As president of Northside Clients Council, Inc., of Legal Services
of Greateriaml, Inc, , 1 would like to encourage you to invest in the
leadership and advocacy +development of client community persons who
serve on Boards of directors and Advisory Boards,
Along with my role with the Northside Clients Council, I
represent the Overall Tenants Council on the Board of Directors of
LSOMI0 as well as serve as a volunteer 'hoard member for several other
community groups, providing input and direction from the poverty
community.

Dinner -Dance Fundraiser, to be held at the Biscayne Bay Marriott Hotel
and Marina, 1633 North Bayshore Drive, Miami, Florida,
The cost is $125.00 per participant and the deadline for
registration is July 31, 1987. Please make check payable to Legal
Services of Greater Miami, Inc., postmarked no later than July 31,

Currently, there are still lingering questiono as to the value of the
client involvement concept, many community based organizations

client advisory boards, who provide input from the poverty community.
Roads and Bridges, Inc. i led by Jawara Lumumba, believe that creative
and productive client involvement is crucial to a meaningful community
based organization. It is an important means of achieving expanded
empowerment for clients. In that spirit, ROADS and BRIDGES, Inc.
will deliver a client leadership advancement workshop for up to 50
potential leaders, from a ten state area. The three day workshop is
designed to strengthen the self-help advocacy capabilities of the
participants.

To accomplish this goal, the participants will be provided an
opportunity to:

1. work with an action force or transformational concept of
leadership responsibility, and accountability;
2. formulate or refine an overall vision for the client participant;
3. work on a more positive approach to using power and

influence for community -wide gain;
4. increase the participants understanding of one pertinent
substantive area of .law (for e.g., The Community
Reinvestment Act, a leadership opportunity for strengthen-
ing our neighborhoods. ;

TRAINING APPROACH
Realizing that adults learn best by doing, ROADS and BRIDGES, Inc.
uses a highly experiencial format for its workshops. A belief for
ROADS and BRIDGES, Inc. is that the best growth occurs through
a

Jawara Lumumba, Lead 'Trainer, is ftecutive director of ROADS and
BRIDG85, Inc. He is the chief design and development technical
advisor for the client leadership training series. A graduate of
Stanford University School of Law, Jawara Lumumba has extensive
experience in organisational development and training interventions
throughout the legal services -community, as well as, national pubilc and
private sector audiences.
PARTICIPANT_AUDIRNCg
To maximise the learning experience, the number of participants is
limited to fifty (SO). The training is designed for clients who are
members of clients councils , client board of directors or client advisory
board members, as well as client advocate staff who are employed by
community based organisations. A total of thirty (30) slots are set
aside for those groups from Bade and Monroe County, Florida, A total
of twenty (20) slots are set aside for groups from the ten state region.
Further selections will be made in a manner through which to insure
ethnic; gender, geographic, and job category diversity, as well as
client involvement
Participants for this training should bring with them an openness to
new experiences, a desire to develop leadership skills, as- well as a
willingness to learn from and contribute to a diverse participant and
training population.
Please plan to arrive promptly for the opening session and remain until
the closing session. Small learning groups will be formed during the
training, and it is important to keep them intact throughout the
training.
CLIENT LEADERSHIP AND APPRECIATION DINNER DANCE
FUNDRAISER; FRIDAY, AUGUST 21, 1987, 8:00 P.M.
The purpose of the dinner dance is to recognize members of Legal
Services client councils in the Dade and Monroe County, Florida, client
community. The funds raised will make it possible to create a client
sponsored Clients Council Newsletter, to provide community legal
education, local updated referral information, and client activity news.
The $30.00 cost for admission is included in the cost of the training.

It is the responsibility of programs to provide transportation for those
clients attending the Client Leadership Training and Client

Fifteen rooms have been reserved for clients representing

incidentals. The hourly rate for valet parking is 0-8 hours $1.001 3-5

service between the Miami International Airport and the Marriott. The
current rate is $7.00 per person, one way. Tact cabs are available at
approximately $10.00 one way,
CLIENT LEADERSHIP TRAINING REGISTRATION FEE
$125.00, includes the cost of the trainers, training materials, coffee
breaks, and admission to the Client Leadership Appreciation
Dinner -Dance Fundraiser, 8 : 00 p.m. on August 21, 1987.
