Home My WebLink AboutR-88-0161A C eT-88-184 2/18/88 RESOLUTION No. 88-16i, A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION SUPPORTING THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY BREAST CANCER DETECTION AWARENESS PROeTECT AND ENCOURAGING LOCAL BUSINESSES TO PROVIDE MAMMOGRAMS AS AN INSURED BENEFIT TO THEIR EMPLOYEES; FURTHER URGING THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE TO ENACT LEGISLATION PROVIDING THE EXPENSE OF MAMMOGRAM SCREENINGS BE CONSIDERED REIMBURSABLE BY ALL HEALTH INSURANCE CARRIERS DOING BUSINESS IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICIALS. WHEREAS, recent statistics indicate that one in ten women will develop breast cancer during their lifetime; and WHEREAS, breast cancer is a major health problem among women in the United States; and WHEREAS, this disease is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women in this country; and WHEREAS. it is estimated that, in 1988, 7,500 new oases of cancer will develop in Florida and 2,400 needless deaths will 000ur from this disease; and WHEREAS, breast cancer is almost 100% ourable if detected early, and; WHEREAS. mammography is the best tool for early detection; WHEREAS, all women over 38 should have mammograms as a Preventative measure; and WHEREAS, most women fail to take the time or make the income necessary to have a mammogram; and WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Miami endorses the American Cancer Society Breast Cancer Detection Awareness Project and supports routine and screening mammograms to reduce the incidence of breast cancer in women and to promote wellness in women and encourage local. public and private businesses to .ITY COMMISSION MEETING OF FEB 18 1988. )N No. provide mammograms as an insured benefit to all of their female employees; and WHEREAS, the cost to business of a late deteoted breast canner oan be as muoh as $61,000 in lost employee time, medioal expenses, eto.; and WHEREAS, everyone benefits by early deteotion; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Seotion I. The Miami City Commission hereby endorses the Amerioan Canoer Sooiety Breast Canoer Detegtion Awareness Projeot and supports routine and screening mammograms to reduoe the inoidenoe of breast cancer and encourages looal, publio and private businesses to provide mammograms as an insured benefit to all female employees. Seotion 2. The Florida Legislature is hereby urged to enaot legislation providing that the expense of mammogram screenings be reoognized and oonsidered as reimbursable by all health insuranoe oarriers doing business in the State of Florida. Seotion 3. The City Clerk is hereby directed to transmit a dopy of this Resolution to Governor Bob Martinez. Speaker of the House of Representatives Jon Mills, Senate President John W.
