HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-23-0121City of Miami Resolution R-23-0121 Legislation File Number: 13590 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com Final Action Date: 3/9/2023 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION CO -DESIGNATING SOUTHWEST 7TH AVENUE BETWEEN SOUTHWEST 3RD STREET AND 4TH STREET, MIAMI, FLORIDA AS "LA DECADA DE LOS 60 AVENUE" PURSUANT TO SECTION 54-137 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS AMENDED; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICIALS. SPONSOR(S): Commissioner Joe Carollo WHEREAS, Ada Merritt Junior High School ("Ada Merritt"), built in 1923 and named after an educational pioneer, was the first Junior High School in South Florida; and WHEREAS, Ada Merritt, located at 660 Southwest 3rd Street, Miami, Florida 33130, is in the heart of City of Miami's ("City") Little Havana neighborhood; and WHEREAS, in the 1960's, inner cities throughout America were plagued with social and economic issues; and WHEREAS, according to Miguel Perez', "The Spirit of Ada Merritt," the students of Ada Merritt during the 1960's "were recently -arrived Cuban refugees, and together we struggled to learn the English language, adapt to American foods, dance to rock'n' roll music, and play American sports... and were likely to be poor and living in a drug, gang and crime -ridden neighborhood"; and WHEREAS, teaching these students at Ada Merritt were a cadre of inspirational teachers "had gone there voluntarily, seeking the challenge of educating inner city immigrant students, committed to leveling the education playing field"; and WHEREAS, amidst the challenges facing immigrant children regarding the future, "reached the mainstream and became contributing members of American society"; and WHEREAS, the City Commission wishes to honor the significant historical contribution and community benefit of Ada Merritt and its alumni to the City by co -designating Southwest 71n Avenue between Southwest 3rd Street and 41" Street, Miami, Florida as "La Decada de los 60 Avenue"; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The City Commission hereby co -designates Southwest 71" Avenue between City of Miami Page 1 of 2 File ID: 13590 (Revision:) Printed On: 3/21/2023 File ID: 13590 Enactment Number: R-23-0121 Southwest 311 Street and 4t" Street, Miami, Florida as La Decada de los 60 Avenue. Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, Solid Waste, the Miami -Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works, the United States Postal Service, and, if a State of Florida road, to the Florida Department of Transportation, District Six, for sign installation within the newly designated roadways. Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
